Australia February Intake from Sri Lanka: Your Real Deadline

September 30, 2026

TL;DR: The Australia February intake from Sri Lanka is still realistic if you start now. University closing dates can sit as late as early March, but that is not your real deadline. From choosing a course to a visa decision usually takes three to four months, so a student who wants to be in class on 1 March should have a complete application ready in October.

Most students look up one date: the university's application deadline. For the February intake, that date can look comfortably far away. RMIT University, for example, lists its international application deadline for Semester 1 as 3 March, two days after teaching begins on 1 March.

That date tells you when the university stops accepting applications. It does not tell you when you need to start. The real deadline is set by everything that happens after the offer: accepting it, paying the deposit, getting your Confirmation of Enrolment, lodging the student visa and arriving in time for orientation.

Australia February intake: what the university dates say

Australian universities publish two kinds of dates, and it helps to read them side by side.

  • Start dates. RMIT lists orientation from 22 to 26 February and teaching from Monday 1 March. Monash University lists classes starting on Monday 1 March.
  • Closing dates. RMIT's international closing date for both bachelor's and postgraduate coursework degrees is 3 March, with a final day to accept offers of 5 March. Deakin University says its closing dates "vary by intake and country to allow time for visa processing and enrolment."

RMIT's own advice is the line to remember: it recommends that international students apply and accept their offer at least four to eight weeks before the course starts, to allow time for the visa. Courses with interviews close earlier in practice. RMIT asks those applicants to finish the interview by 28 January and to accept and pay by 1 February.

So the published closing date is a limit, not a plan.

The timeline that decides February

At Prosper, we plan Australian applications on a three to four month range, from signing with us to a visa decision. That range is deliberately honest, because Australian visa assessment looks closely at genuine student intent and at where your funds come from.

Working back from a 1 March start, here is how that range fits together.

When Step What must be ready
Early October Course and university shortlist Transcripts, certificates, English test result, passport
Within 24 hours of a complete file Application submitted Statement of purpose where the course asks for one
Late October to mid November Offer received Typical wait is one to two weeks after submission
November Accept the offer, pay the deposit, receive your CoE Tuition deposit, health cover arranged
November to December Lodge the student visa Genuine student answers, evidence of funds, health checks
January Visa decision, flights, accommodation Visa grant before you book anything you cannot change
Mid to late February Arrive and attend orientation Orientation at RMIT runs 22 to 26 February

Every step ends before the course begins on 1 March. If the offer slips from November to December, the visa steps land in the holiday period and the margin disappears.

Two points often slow applications at the visa stage. The first is funds: Australia asks you to show that the money is genuinely available to you, and where it came from. Our guide to Australia student visa genuine access to funds explains what families usually need to prepare. The second is your university choice, since processing speed can depend on the provider, as our article on Australia student visa processing priority sets out.

What to do this October

If February is your goal, October is the month that decides it. Focus on three things.

  1. Finish your document set first. An application only moves when it is complete. At Prosper, applications go out within 24 hours of receiving complete documents, but a missing transcript or an expired English test can cost weeks.
  2. Choose two or three universities, not ten. Every extra application means another set of conditions and another deposit decision. A short, well-matched list moves faster to a firm offer.
  3. Plan the money early. The Study Australia website confirms the Student visa application charge rose from AUD 2,000 to AUD 2,500. Budget for it alongside your deposit and health cover, and prepare your funds evidence in the same weeks you apply to universities.

This is also the time to think about your course level. Australia now expects students who change courses on a new visa to move upward, not sideways, so your first choice carries more weight. Our article on Australia student visa course progression explains why.

Sandeepani Wickramasinghe, who co-founded Prosper with Lasantha Jayawardena, studied at Curtin University in Australia. The principle our admissions team works to is simple: treat the university deadline as the last possible day, and set your own deadline three to four months before the start date.

When July is the better choice

February is not right for everyone. Consider the July intake instead if any of these apply:

  • You are still waiting for final results or a degree certificate.
  • You have not yet taken an English test, or your score is below your course's requirement.
  • Your funds are spread across several accounts or sponsors and will take time to document properly.

Moving to July gives you time to build a stronger file.
