Australia Student Visa Health Examination: How to Book It Before You Lodge

October 08, 2026

TL;DR: An Australia student visa health examination is needed by most applicants who plan to stay 6 months or more. You can usually do it before you lodge: fill in My Health Declarations, get a HAP ID, then see an approved panel physician who sends the results to Home Affairs electronically. Results are generally valid for 12 months and you pay for the exams. From Sri Lanka, book a panel physician on the Home Affairs list.

The health examination is one of the few steps in a student visa application that you can finish early, and leaving it late can hold up a decision. A visa case can sit waiting for health results while your Confirmation of Enrolment and your flights wait with it. Doing it first, in the right order, removes that wait.

Who needs a health examination

Australia's health requirement applies to most visa applicants. The Australian High Commission in Colombo lists the situations where a medical examination is needed. For students, the main ones are:

  • you plan to stay in Australia for 6 months or more
  • you will study or work as a doctor, dentist, nurse or paramedic
  • you are likely to enter a hospital or other health care setting, including clinical placements
  • you are likely to work or train at a childcare centre, preschool or creche

Most full degree students meet the first point, so plan on a health examination unless Home Affairs tells you otherwise.

Before you lodge or after: the two routes

Before you lodge (recommended) After you lodge
How you start Submit My Health Declarations online Home Affairs sends a request with your HAP ID
What you get A HAP ID and a referral letter A HAP ID and a referral letter
Where results go A panel physician enters them in eMedical The same
What you add to the visa Your HAP ID in the application Nothing extra; the case updates
Main benefit Your visa is not held up waiting for health results None; the case waits for your results

The High Commission recommends that new applicants who need medical examinations complete them before lodging, to avoid delays. One warning from the same guidance: do not use My Health Declarations if you have already lodged your visa application.

The steps, in order

  1. Submit My Health Declarations in ImmiAccount. You find out whether exams are required and receive a HAP ID.
  2. Consent in eMedical Client and complete your medical history if asked, then download your eMedical referral letter.
  3. Book an approved panel physician. Outside Australia you must use an approved panel physician or clinic, and you need your HAP ID to book. Home Affairs lists them on its arrange your health examinations page.
  4. Attend with your referral letter. The clinic finds your case with the HAP ID and records the results in eMedical.
  5. Results are submitted electronically. Many cases clear within minutes; some are referred for manual review.
  6. Lodge your visa with the HAP ID, so the case officer can link your results.

Home Affairs says results are generally valid for 12 months, so do not book too early. If processing is delayed beyond that, you may need to repeat them. You pay for the examinations yourself, so include them in your budget alongside the visa charge in our guide to Australia student visa cost.

What you will not see

Results are not shared with you before you lodge. If a significant health condition is found, extra steps follow, and a final opinion is given only after you have applied. This is normal process, not a sign of a problem. Keep your plans flexible until the visa is granted, and remember that health cover in Australia is a separate step: our guide to OSHC for an Australia student visa explains it.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • You must use a panel physician approved by Home Affairs. Check the current list for Sri Lanka on the Home Affairs website before you book, and do not rely on a clinic's own claim.
  • The Australian High Commission in Colombo publishes the health requirement and the step-by-step process on its website.
  • Take your eMedical referral letter and any identity documents the clinic asks for, and keep a copy of your HAP ID with your CoE.

Can I do the health check before I lodge my visa? Yes, if you have not lodged yet. Submit My Health Declarations to get a HAP ID, then attend a panel physician.

How long are the results valid? Generally 12 months. If your application takes longer, you may be asked to repeat them.

PS: The health check is quick to finish early and slow to fix late, and the same is true of most visa steps. If you want help lining up your course, CoE and visa in the right order, start with a quick eligibility check.
