Who can apply from Sri Lanka

Chevening sets the same core rules for every country. To apply, you must:

• Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's programme, completed by October 2024 for this cycle.
• Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after your degree. Chevening says this is roughly two years of full-time work.
• Apply to three different eligible UK master's courses.
• Commit to returning to Sri Lanka for at least two years after the scholarship ends.

Full-time jobs, part-time jobs, volunteering and internships all count toward the 2,800 hours, according to Chevening's work experience rules. You can list up to fifteen separate periods of work. The system works out your hours by multiplying weeks worked by hours per week, so check your own sum before you submit. An application that falls short is rejected automatically.

You cannot apply if you hold British citizenship, live in the UK when you apply, or work for the British Council or a UK government department. The full list is on the Chevening eligibility page.

The four essays are the application

Chevening scores you on four areas. Its application criteria set them out:

1. Leadership and influence. Real examples with clear results.
2. Networking. How you build professional relationships and what they achieved.
3. Studying in the UK. Why these three courses, and how they link to your goals.
4. Career plan. Short, medium and long-term goals, and how you will get there.

Chevening's reading committees have published what goes wrong most often. In their feedback to applicants, they flag essays that list job duties instead of showing influence, essays that write "we" instead of "I", and course essays that cover only one of the three choices or copy text from university websites.

The third essay is where course choice decides the outcome. A reader should see three courses that make sense together. Three MSc programmes in public policy, development economics and international development can tell one story. Three unrelated courses picked for their university names cannot.

Do not leave submission for the last hour. Websites slow down near deadlines, and a missed cut-off cannot be fixed.

What happens after you submit

Chevening publishes its 2027/28 timeline. Reading committees assess applications from mid-October to January. Shortlisted candidates hear in mid-February, interviews run from March to April, and results arrive from mid-June. You must hold one unconditional offer from your three course choices by 8 July 2027.

That last date is why course choice matters twice. You apply to universities separately, and the offer you hold in July has to be for one of the three courses you named now.
