A student sits on the stone steps of a red-brick UK campus in autumn reading her offer letter, weighing a conditional vs unconditional offer in the UK.

Conditional vs Unconditional Offer in the UK: What Each Means for Your CAS

October 14, 2026

TL;DR: A conditional offer from a UK university means you have a place once you meet the conditions in your offer letter, usually your final degree result, an English score and sometimes a deposit or an ATAS certificate. An unconditional offer means the academic place is confirmed. For international students the difference matters because a university issues your CAS, and so opens the door to your Student visa, only once your offer is unconditional.

A conditional offer is normal, not a sign of doubt. What matters is knowing which conditions stand between you and an unconditional offer, what evidence clears each one, and how long each takes, because every week lost on a missing document comes off your visa timeline. If you are comparing conditional vs unconditional offer UK options right now, from Sri Lanka or anywhere else, this guide shows you what to do with each.

What a conditional and an unconditional offer mean

UCAS defines the two plainly. A conditional offer means "you still need to meet the requirements, usually exam results". An unconditional offer means "you've got a place, although there might still be a few things to arrange", such as proof of results or financial requirements.

For undergraduate applicants through UCAS, you then reply to your offers. Your firm choice is your first choice. Your insurance choice is the back-up to a conditional firm acceptance. When a conditional firm offer is confirmed, it becomes Unconditional Firm, which means your place is secured.

Postgraduate applicants usually apply direct to each university, but the logic is the same: a conditional offer lists what you still owe, and the offer turns unconditional when the university has checked every item.

Why the difference matters for your CAS and visa

UKVI's sponsor guidance tells universities that when they give a student an unconditional offer, they issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Many universities add their own steps before the CAS. UCL, for example, says you can only obtain a CAS once you have an unconditional offer, and Stirling asks for formal acceptance and any deposit as well.

A CAS is valid for six months from the date it is assigned, and you must apply for your Student visa within that window. Our guide to the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies covers what to check on it. The CAS records your course dates, your fees and any amount paid, and how your English was assessed. So the unconditional offer is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the gate to the visa application.

The common conditions and how to clear each one

These conditions appear again and again in international postgraduate offers from Birmingham, Newcastle and Imperial, and in undergraduate offers through UCAS.

Condition What usually clears it Watch out for
Final degree result Official final transcript and degree certificate Birmingham states that unofficial transcripts and screenshots are not accepted
English language The score set in your offer, or completing the university's pre-sessional course The score must meet the level in your offer letter, not a general guide
Tuition deposit Payment by the date on your offer or invoice Amounts vary: Birmingham asks £2,000, Imperial 10% of first-year fees, due within 30 days of the invoice
ATAS certificate ATAS clearance for certain science and technology courses Newcastle advises applying up to six months before the course, with processing of up to 20 working days
References Signed, dated letters on official letterhead where asked Newcastle lists this format in its offer guide

Start with the slowest item. ATAS and an English test booking usually take longest, while a transcript can often be requested in days.

Meeting an English condition with a pre-sessional course

If your English score is just short, many universities let you meet the condition by completing their pre-sessional English course. Birmingham states that completing a pre-sessional course meets the English condition in its offers.

Some universities, such as Liverpool, issue one combined CAS covering the pre-sessional and the degree when English is the last condition left. If you do not attend or pass the pre-sessional, Liverpool withdraws the unconditional offer. For the visa itself, degree-level study needs English at CEFR B2, which your university can assess for you.

What happens if you miss a condition

Missing a condition does not always end the offer. UCAS notes that a university may still accept you with lower grades, or offer a place on a different course. Newcastle tells postgraduate applicants who have just missed a condition to upload their results anyway, because it may still offer a place.

Other universities are firm. Birmingham says all conditions must be met in full before you can register. The safest move is to tell the admissions team early, with evidence, rather than waiting for the deadline to pass.

Deadlines for meeting your conditions

For undergraduate entry, UCAS says most universities set 2 September as the deadline for meeting offer conditions. Postgraduate deadlines are set by each university and are written in your offer letter. UAL, for example, used 31 August for September 2026 starts and 11 December 2026 for January 2027 starts. For January intakes in particular, the conditions deadline arrives quickly, so clear the slow items first.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Request your official final transcript and degree certificate from your university's examinations or registrar's office early, because screenshots and provisional letters are often refused.
  • Some universities set a higher deposit for applicants from certain countries. Newcastle, for example, listed a £5,000 deposit for applicants from Sri Lanka and five other countries for offers made after 18 March 2026, so read your own offer letter for the exact amount.
  • If you are taking IELTS for UKVI or another test in Colombo, book early so your result arrives before the conditions deadline.

FAQ

Is an unconditional offer better than a conditional one? It is further along, not better. Both lead to the same place once the conditions are met. Accept the course that fits you, not the offer type.

Can I apply for my UK Student visa with a conditional offer? No. You need a CAS, and universities issue it once your offer is unconditional.

How long is a CAS valid? Six months from the date it is assigned. Apply for your visa within that time.

Does an unconditional offer from Sri Lanka still need a deposit? Often yes. A deposit is usually a separate step from the academic conditions, and some universities set the amount by the applicant's country.
