Graduate Diploma in New Zealand: The New Post-Study Work Visa Route and Its Catch
TL;DR: From 16 November 2026, a Level 7 Graduate Diploma studied full-time in New Zealand will qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to one year, if you already hold a bachelor's degree from any country. It is a real new option for Sri Lankan graduates. But you can only ever hold one Post-Study Work Visa, and a master's studied for 30 weeks or more earns three years. Choose the course first, then the visa follows.
For a Sri Lankan graduate who wants a New Zealand qualification without committing to a full master's, this is the most useful change in years. It is also easy to misread. A graduate diploma New Zealand post study work visa is now possible, but taking it can close a longer door later.
What changed
Immigration New Zealand confirmed on 10 September 2026 that, from Monday 16 November 2026, Post-Study Work Visa eligibility extends to people who:
- completed a graduate diploma at NZQCF Level 7
- hold a bachelor's degree, completed in New Zealand or overseas
- studied full-time in New Zealand for the full duration of the graduate diploma
- were enrolled for the full duration, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning
The visa is granted for the time you spent studying the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. You can read the notice on the Immigration New Zealand website.
The line most people will miss
The same notice states: "An individual can only be granted 1 Post-Study Work Visa. Anyone who has held a Post-Study Work Visa in the past is not eligible for another."
Now compare that with the master's rule. Immigration New Zealand says that if you complete a master's or doctoral qualification in New Zealand and study there for at least 30 weeks, you can work in New Zealand for three years.
So a graduate diploma followed by a master's is not the same as "one year plus three years". If you use your one Post-Study Work Visa after the graduate diploma, you will not get another after the master's. Plan the order of your study with that in mind.

Two graduate diplomas worth looking at
Both of these are published by the universities as Level 7, one year full-time programmes.
AUT Graduate Diploma in Business. Entry is a bachelor's degree or relevant professional qualification or experience approved by the Dean, so your first degree does not have to be in business. AUT publishes an international fee of NZ$39,959.67 for the full 120-point programme, and an English requirement of IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Massey University Graduate Diploma in Information Sciences. A 120-credit, one-year programme for people who already hold a degree. Massey's currently published international tuition fee is NZ$41,010. The on-campus option is in Auckland. See the Massey course page.
Check two things with the university before you apply: that the programme is at NZQCF Level 7, and that you can study it full-time on campus for its full duration. Online or part-time study will not count.
How to decide
Ask yourself three questions.
Do you want to change field? A graduate diploma is built for this. A Sri Lankan accounting graduate who wants to move into information systems, for example, can use one without meeting a master's entry bar in the new field.
Is New Zealand your long-term study plan? If you may want a master's later, think carefully before using your one Post-Study Work Visa on the graduate diploma.
Can you fund a year? On top of tuition, Immigration New Zealand requires evidence of NZ$20,000 for each year of study for living costs.

Frequently asked questions
Does a graduate diploma in New Zealand give a post-study work visa? From 16 November 2026, yes, for a Level 7 graduate diploma studied full-time in New Zealand, if you also hold a bachelor's degree.
How long is the visa after a graduate diploma? As long as you studied the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.
Can my bachelor's be from Sri Lanka? Yes. Immigration New Zealand says the bachelor's can be completed in New Zealand or overseas.

Can my partner join me? Immigration New Zealand says Post-Study Work Visa holders can support partners and dependent children for visitor, work or dependent child student visas. Partner rules during the study period are separate, so check them for your course.
