MBA in the UK for International Students: Work Experience, GMAT and Fees Compared

October 15, 2026

TL;DR: An MBA in the UK is usually a one-year, full-time course for people who already have several years of work experience. The programmes compared here ask for a good bachelor's degree and at least three years of professional experience. Some, such as Bath and Birmingham, do not require the GMAT, while others, such as Imperial, do. Fees range widely, from £39,700 to £81,000 for the programmes compared here.

An MBA in the UK for international students is a different decision from a standard master's. The full-time programmes compared here last one year, and each one asks for years of work experience as well as a degree. For graduates with three to six years in a job, it can be a one-year route to a management degree. For someone fresh out of university, it is usually the wrong course, and a specialist master's fits better.

Not sure whether your degree and work history fit a UK MBA or a specialist master's? Check your eligibility with Prosper.

Who a UK MBA is for

The clearest test is your work history. Every programme in our comparison asks for at least three years of experience after graduation, and the people admitted usually have more:

  • University of Bath: at least three years of full-time, post-graduation work experience with evidence of career progression. Its 2025/26 class has an average age of 30 and an average of six years' experience.
  • University of Birmingham: at least three years' professional experience, with five years usually expected.
  • Imperial College Business School: at least three years of continuous, relevant full-time work experience. Imperial says its students average about six years.

If you have less than three years, a specialist master's in management, finance, analytics or project management is often the better fit. Our guide to MSc Project Management in the UK and our comparison of business analytics and data science show two such routes.

UK MBA entry requirements compared

Programme Length and start Degree Work experience Admissions test Fee shown
Bath MBA 1 year, September 2027 2:1 or international equivalent 3+ years, with progression Not required £39,700
Birmingham MBA 1 year, September 2027 2:1, or a degree-level professional qualification 3+ years, 5 usually expected Not required, but considered International fee not listed; check before applying
Imperial Full-Time MBA 12 months, September 2027 Second class honours, or an accepted professional qualification 3+ years, continuous and full time GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment required £81,000

Figures are taken from each programme's own pages. Bath's page does not say whether its fee is the international rate, so confirm the fee for your status with each school before you apply.

GMAT, English and deadlines

The GMAT is not universal. Bath says GMAC tests are not required. Birmingham says the GMAT is not required but is considered. Imperial requires the GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment, with a minimum GMAT Focus score of 555 and a limited number of waivers.

English entry scores can be high. Imperial asks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each part. Check each school's own score, because it is often above the visa minimum. Our guide to English waivers for UK study explains when a test can be avoided.

Many schools admit in rounds. Imperial's next round for September 2027 entry closes on 12 January 2027, with later rounds in March and May. Applying in an earlier round leaves more time for scholarships and your visa.

Accreditation: what AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS tell you

Birmingham Business School holds all three of the main business school accreditations: AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The Association of MBAs (AMBA) describes its accreditation as a mark of quality assurance in business education and says every accredited programme is reviewed every five years. Accreditation is not a guarantee of outcomes, but it is a useful filter when you compare two programmes with similar fees.

After the MBA: what the student visa allows

A one-year MBA is a taught master's, so the usual Student visa rules apply. GOV.UK says that for courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, only students on a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree can bring a partner or children. That means a taught MBA does not qualify. Our guide to UK student visa dependants explains this in full.

After graduating, the Graduate visa lets you stay and work. GOV.UK says it lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. A September 2027 MBA graduate would therefore apply under the 18-month rule. See our guide to the UK Graduate Route at 18 months.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA or CIMA can count towards entry at some schools. Imperial lists full ACCA membership and CIMA Associateship or Fellowship as accepted alternatives to a degree.
  • Plan the English test early if you need one. British Council Sri Lanka lists IELTS Academic on computer at LKR 77,000, effective from 9 June 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an MBA in the UK? The full-time programmes compared here last one year, or 12 months, starting in September.

Can I do an MBA in the UK without work experience? Not usually. Bath, Birmingham and Imperial all ask for at least three years of experience after graduation.

Do I need the GMAT for an MBA in the UK? It depends on the school. Bath and Birmingham do not require it. Imperial requires the GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment.

How much does an MBA in the UK cost? Of the programmes compared, Bath shows £39,700 and Imperial £81,000. Check each school's international fee for your entry year.

Can I take my family with me on a UK MBA from Sri Lanka? No. A taught MBA does not allow you to bring a partner or children on the Student visa, because only research degrees qualify.

PS: An MBA is a career decision first and a course decision second. If you are weighing a UK MBA against a specialist master's, the deciding factors are your years of experience, your role and the kind of job you want next. Check your eligibility with Prosper and we can look at your profile against both routes.
