MSc Engineering Management in the UK: Entry, Accreditation and Fees Compared

October 14, 2026

TL;DR: An MSc Engineering Management in the UK is usually a one-year master's for engineering, science or technology graduates who want to move toward running projects, operations and engineering teams. Entry is often a 2:2 or 2:1 equivalent, with IELTS from 6.0 to 6.5. Fees at the universities in this guide run from about £19,100 to £37,460. The key differences are which first degrees each university accepts and whether the course is accredited toward Chartered Engineer status.

Engineers often reach a point where the technical work is no longer the hard part. The hard part is budgets, suppliers, schedules and people. An MSc Engineering Management in the UK is built for that shift. If you are weighing an msc engineering management uk course, from Sri Lanka or elsewhere, the choice comes down to three questions: does your first degree qualify, does the course carry the accreditation you need, and does it fit your budget and intake.

What an MSc Engineering Management covers

Across York, Warwick, Brunel, Northumbria and Birmingham, the core modules repeat: strategy and finance for engineering, operations and supply chain, quality and reliability, project planning, innovation and product development, sustainability, and data analytics, ending with a research or industry project.

It is wider than a project management degree. A University of Hull guide describes project management as "one facet of the broader field of engineering management", which takes a big-picture view of how an engineering company plans and performs. If your goal is delivering projects specifically, compare it with our guide to MSc Project Management in the UK.

It is also different from an MBA. Warwick Business School notes that an MBA usually needs several years of managerial experience and takes a broader business focus, while a master's suits people coming more directly from a degree.

Which first degree each university accepts

University and course Degree class Subjects accepted IELTS (overall, each part)
York, MSc Engineering Management 2:2 Engineering subjects or engineering management 6.0, 5.5
De Montfort, Engineering Management MSc 2:2 Engineering-related subjects 6.0, 5.5
Brunel, Engineering Management MSc 2:2 Engineering, science, maths or technology 6.0, 5.5
Northumbria, Engineering Management MSc 2:2 Engineering or science, others considered individually 6.5, 5.5
Birmingham, MSc Advanced Engineering Management 2:2 Engineering, physical sciences, maths or technology 6.5, 6.0
Warwick, MSc Engineering Business Management 2:1 IT, engineering, science or business 6.5, 6.0

None of these universities requires work experience for standard entry. Several, including Warwick, Birmingham, De Montfort, York and Northumbria, say relevant experience can support an application with a lower grade or a less usual background.

Accreditation and Chartered Engineer status

The Engineering Council explains that a master's accredited as "further learning for CEng" can top up an accredited bachelor's degree to the academic standard for Chartered Engineer. Warwick and Northumbria both state that their courses meet this further learning standard, and both add that full CEng also needs a CEng-accredited first degree. Birmingham's course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators as meeting further learning for CEng.

York is accredited by the IET, De Montfort by the IET to CEng level, and Brunel by the IMechE, though their pages do not use the exact "further learning" wording, so confirm with the university if CEng matters to you. The Engineering Council also notes that degrees are never accredited after the fact, and that people without accredited degrees can still apply through an individual route assessed by a professional engineering institution.

Fees, length and intakes

University Length International fee Intakes
York 1 year £33,900 (2027/28) September
Warwick 1 year £37,460 (2026 WMG MSc fee) September
De Montfort 12 or 16 months £19,100 (2027/28) September and January
Brunel 1 year £24,795 (2026/27) September and January
Northumbria 16 months £21,500 first year (2026/27) September and January

Birmingham also runs September and January intakes, with a January 2027 application deadline of 18 December 2026, but its international fee was not shown on its page when checked. Ask the university directly.

Work rights during and after the course

On a Student visa for a full-time degree, you can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time outside term, under Appendix Student. After graduating, the Graduate visa gives master's graduates two years if they apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if they apply on or after 1 January 2027. Most students starting a one-year course from now will apply in 2027 or later, so plan around 18 months.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • UK universities convert your bachelor's grade into a UK class, so ask each university what result it treats as a 2:2 or 2:1 for your university and degree.
  • If your degree is from a Sri Lankan institution accredited by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, ask the course team how that affects the CEng route before you choose.
  • For January starts, book your English test early, because Birmingham's 18 December 2026 deadline leaves little room.

FAQ

Can I do an MSc Engineering Management without an engineering degree? Some courses accept science, maths, technology, IT or business degrees, including Brunel, Birmingham and Warwick. York and De Montfort ask for engineering degrees.

Is MSc Engineering Management better than an MBA? They suit different stages. The MSc fits people closer to their first degree, while an MBA usually expects years of managerial experience.

Does this master's make me a Chartered Engineer? Not on its own. An accredited course meets the further learning part, and you also need an accredited first degree and professional review.

What IELTS score do I need? Between 6.0 and 6.5 overall at the universities in this guide, with 5.5 or 6.0 in each part.

Do graduates from Sri Lanka need work experience? No. None of these courses requires it for standard entry, though it can help with a lower grade.
