New Zealand February Intake from Sri Lanka: Is There Still Time to Apply?
TL;DR: You can still plan for the New Zealand February intake from Sri Lanka, but the real deadline is earlier than most university dates suggest. The University of Auckland asks international applicants for Semester One to apply by 1 December 2026. Immigration New Zealand advises applicants from Sri Lanka to apply for the visa at least three months before travel. For a February start, that points to a visa application by mid-November, so your offer needs to arrive well before then.
Most students read the university closing date and relax. That is the trap. The university date tells you when the university needs your application. It does not tell you when Immigration New Zealand needs your visa application, and for Sri Lankan applicants, that second date comes first.
Two deadlines, not one
The university deadline. The University of Auckland states that "International applicants for Semester One 2027 need to apply by December 1 2026 to allow sufficient time for visa applications to be processed." Some programmes close much earlier. The Master of Nursing Science closes on 1 October 2026, and the Master of Counselling (240 points) closes on 1 November 2026, according to Auckland's postgraduate closing dates.
The visa deadline. Immigration New Zealand says international students are "strongly encouraged to apply at least 3 months before their intended travel date." It names Sri Lanka, with India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, as countries where "we receive a high volume of applications," on its student visa wait times page.
Put the two together and the order becomes clear. The offer comes first, the visa application second, and both need to happen by November if you want to travel in February.
How long the visa takes right now
Immigration New Zealand publishes wait times that it updates weekly. At the time of writing, for students enrolling at universities:

These figures cover applications decided in the previous four weeks. Immigration New Zealand warns that peak season can push times beyond these numbers. December and January are peak months for February starts, so plan for the longer end.
Working backwards from a February start
Here is a realistic sequence for a postgraduate applicant in Colombo. Every step finishes before the intake.

If you are only choosing a course in late October, February is still possible for some programmes, but the margin is thin. At that point, July is often the stronger choice.
The Sri Lanka specific steps
Three parts of the file tend to take the longest for Sri Lankan applicants.
Funds evidence. For tertiary study, Immigration New Zealand asks for NZD 20,000 for each year of study if the course is one year or longer, or NZD 1,667 a month for shorter study, according to its student fund requirements. This is on top of tuition. Bank statements should cover the last three months, and fixed deposits should have been held for at least three months.
The Funds Transfer Scheme. Immigration New Zealand lists Sri Lanka among the countries whose students can use the Funds Transfer Scheme, and it may require some applicants to use it. Check early whether it applies to you, because it adds steps.

In our experience, files are rarely delayed by the university application. They are delayed by funds that were moved too late to show three months of history. If your money is not yet sitting in the account you plan to use, fix that first.
When to choose July instead
February is the right call if you already have your transcripts, an English test result and funds with three months of history. July is usually the better choice if any of these apply:
You still need to sit IELTS or PTE.
Your funds are being moved or arranged now.
Your chosen programme has already closed for Semester One.
You are still deciding between courses.
A rushed February application that fails costs more than a well-prepared July start.
