PhD in New Zealand for International Students: Domestic Fees, Work Rights and How to Apply
TL;DR: A PhD in New Zealand for international students is charged at the domestic tuition rate, not the international one. At the University of Auckland that is NZ$8,847.60 a year in 2026, as long as you live in New Zealand while you study. Doctoral students can also work unlimited hours, bring a partner on a work visa, and apply for a three-year post-study work visa when they finish.
Most students compare PhD options on rankings and supervisors, then stop when they see international fees. New Zealand removes that problem for doctoral study. The real questions become whether your research fits a supervisor, and whether you can win one of the funded scholarships.

What a PhD in New Zealand costs international students
Education New Zealand states that international PhD students pay the same fees as New Zealand domestic students. Each university applies the rule with conditions you need to know:
| University | PhD tuition (international students) | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| University of Auckland | NZ$8,847.60 a year (2026) | Live in New Zealand for the whole programme; up to 12 months of research abroad in total |
| University of Otago | Domestic fees, around NZ$8,000 a year on average, varying by subject | Up to one year overseas for research without losing domestic fee status |
| Victoria University of Wellington | Domestic fees | Candidates who live and study in New Zealand |
The condition matters. At Auckland, a student who loses eligibility, for example by spending too long overseas, pays international fees instead. Ask your university how its rule works before you plan fieldwork abroad.

Work and family rights during your PhD
- Unlimited work hours. Immigration New Zealand says there is no limit on the hours you can work if you are enrolled in a PhD or research master's. If you work full time, you must keep studying full time. Other students are limited to 25 hours a week in term.
- Partner work visa. Students on a level 9 or 10 qualification can support a work visa for their partner. A doctorate is level 10. See our guide to the Partner of a Student Work Visa.
- Children. PhD students can support student visas for dependent children, and Education New Zealand says children can enrol as domestic students in state schools.
- After you finish. Graduates of a New Zealand master's or doctoral qualification who studied in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can get a post-study work visa for up to three years.
How to apply for a PhD in New Zealand
Using the University of Auckland as an example:
- Check entry. You need an honours or master's degree with evidence of significant research and a GPA of 6.0 on Auckland's scale. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.
- Check English. Auckland asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.
- Find a fit. You do not have to name a supervisor in your application, but acceptance depends on one being available, so browse supervisor profiles first.
- Write your research outline. The application asks for a statement of research intent and an outline of the proposed research.
- Pick your start. You can start a PhD at any time of year, and you must enrol within six months of an unconditional offer. Full-time study takes three to four years.

Scholarships and the money you must show
- University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship: a stipend of NZ$35,468 a year, not taxed, plus tuition, for up to 42 months. Everyone offered a doctoral place is considered. For 2027 there are four rounds, and the first closes on 1 November 2026.
- University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship: NZ$34,128 a year plus a domestic tuition fee waiver for 36 months, open to international students, with quarterly rounds. Otago says it is reviewing the programme, so check the current terms.
- Wellington Doctoral Scholarship: NZ$32,000 a year plus tuition, decided with your PhD application.
For the student visa, Immigration New Zealand asks you to show NZD 20,000 a year for living costs on top of tuition, and a scholarship award letter is accepted as evidence. Our guide to New Zealand student visa funds covers the details.
Applying from Sri Lanka
Universities convert overseas grades to their own scale, so ask the admissions team how your honours class or GPA from a Sri Lankan university maps to the entry GPA before you apply. A first-class or second-class upper honours degree with a research dissertation is a stronger base than a three-year general degree. Book your IELTS early in Colombo, because many scholarship rounds expect complete documents.
