Pre-Registration Nursing Master's in the UK: Who Can Apply and How to Start
TL;DR: A pre-registration nursing master's in the UK lets a graduate from another field train as a registered nurse in about two years. Typical entry is a 2:1 in any subject or a 2:2 in a science subject, IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each part, and evidence of care experience or prior learning. Not every university takes international students on a Student visa for every intake, so check before you apply.
Many graduates reach their mid-twenties and realise they want a hands-on career in healthcare. In the UK there is a route that does not mean starting a three-year bachelor's again. A pre-registration nursing master's, usually called an MSc Nursing (pre-registration), trains you as a nurse in two years and leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
It is demanding, it has more entry steps than most master's degrees, and places for international students are limited. This guide explains who it suits and how to apply.

What a pre-registration nursing master's is
It is a postgraduate course for graduates who are not yet nurses. Most courses focus on one field of nursing, such as adult nursing, and combine university teaching with clinical placements.
The University of Suffolk's MSc Adult Nursing (Pre-registration), for example, runs for two years full time. It requires at least 2,300 clinical hours and 2,300 theory hours. On placement, students work 37.5 hours a week, including day, night and weekend shifts, in NHS hospital wards, community nursing and other settings.
This is not a course for registered nurses who want to specialise. If you already hold a nursing qualification, the route is different.

Every course also has checks beyond grades. Suffolk lists a successful interview, a health check, an enhanced DBS check and two references. UEA invites applicants outside England to an online interview of about 40 minutes.
The catch: not every intake takes international students
This is easy to miss. Some universities limit or close international places on their pre-registration nursing courses for some intakes.
- The University of Suffolk states that its course is closed to international applications for its next January intake.
- The University of Cumbria states that it was not accepting applications from international students needing a Student visa for its MSc Nursing courses starting this September.
So the first step is not choosing a university. It is finding the universities that will accept a Student visa applicant for your intake. Ask the admissions team directly and get the answer in writing.
How to apply
- Check the course is NMC approved. You can search the NMC list of approved programmes.
- Confirm international places for your intake. As above.
- Build your evidence. Gather care experience with a manager's sign-off, or prepare a prior learning portfolio if the university asks for one.
- Book your English test early. IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each part is a high bar. UEA also requires the test to be taken within two years of the course start. Our guide to OET vs IELTS for healthcare professionals explains the difference between the tests.
- Apply directly. Suffolk and UEA take applications directly through their own websites, not through UCAS. UEA lists a closing date of 1 June for its February start.
- Prepare for interview and checks. Be ready to explain why you want to nurse and what your care experience taught you.
What it costs
International fees vary. Suffolk lists £18,900 a year for its current entry and £19,500 for the following year. Cumbria lists £17,800 a year. UEA lists £22,700 a year for an earlier intake. On top of fees, you need living costs and visa costs, set out in our guide to the UK student visa cost.
Applying from Sri Lanka
- Ask each university whether it accepts your O/L English and Mathematics results as equivalent to GCSE grade 4/C.
- Care experience gained in Sri Lanka, paid or volunteer, may count. Get it signed off by a manager on letterhead with dates and hours.
- If your degree is from a Sri Lankan university, ask the admissions team how it compares with a UK 2:1 or 2:2.
