RMIT University for International Students: Fees, Entry and Intakes

November 02, 2026

TL;DR: RMIT University for international students: a Melbourne university founded in 1887, with 2027 fees of about AU$47,040 a year for courses such as the Bachelor of Business and the Master of Data Science, entry from IELTS Academic 6.5, and a 20% Future Leaders Scholarship for citizens of six South Asian countries. Semester 1 classes start on 1 March 2027.

RMIT draws international students with a city-centre campus, strong links with industry and a long list of practical degrees in business, technology, engineering and design. The question is not whether RMIT is well known, but whether its entry rules and fees fit you. Check your eligibility with Prosper if you would like us to check.

Is RMIT University a good choice for international students?

RMIT (the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) was founded in 1887 and is a member of the Australian Technology Network of universities. Its CRICOS provider code is 00122A, which confirms it is registered to teach international students on a student visa.

RMIT says its internships, placements and work-integrated learning help students put theory into practice, and that its courses are informed by industry partners such as Deloitte and Adidas. In the Master of Data Science, for example, the capstone project is carried out alongside industry.

RMIT campuses in Melbourne

  • City campus: in central Melbourne. The Bachelor of Business, the Master of Data Science and Foundation Studies are taught here.
  • Brunswick: about 6 km north of the city, in the Sydney Road district.
  • Bundoora: in the north-eastern suburbs, with parkland and sports facilities.
  • Point Cook: a regional site, not a full campus, home to RMIT's Aviation Academy for pilot training.

RMIT fees for international students

RMIT does not publish one fee range; each course page lists its own indicative fee. Three examples for 2027:

Course Length Annual fee (2027, indicative) Intakes
Bachelor of Business (BP343) 3 years AU$47,040 February, July, October
Master of Data Science (MC267) 2 years AU$47,040 February, July
Master of Engineering (Mechanical) (MC258) 2 years See course page February, July

RMIT states that fees may rise by no more than 7.5% each calendar year. For a wider view of what Australian universities charge, see Australia tuition fees for international students. RMIT entry and English requirements

Most RMIT bachelor's and master's courses sit at RMIT's Tier 1 English level:

Test Tier 1 score
IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
PTE Academic 58 overall, no score below 50
TOEFL iBT 79 overall
Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 176 overall, no score below 169

Some courses sit at Tier 2 (IELTS 7.0, no band below 6.5). RMIT does not accept at-home or online tests for international students, so the Duolingo English Test will not work here.

For a master's, RMIT course pages ask for a bachelor's degree, or an international equivalent, with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0. Each course adds its own subject rules.

RMIT scholarships for international students

The RMIT Future Leaders Scholarship gives a 20% reduction in tuition fees for the full length of an eligible bachelor's or master's by coursework. It is open to citizens of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, for offers from 2026 intakes onwards, and no separate scholarship application is needed. RMIT says it awards more than 2,000 scholarships every year in total.

RMIT intakes and deadlines

Semester Orientation Classes start Apply by
Semester 1, 2027 22 to 26 February 1 March 3 March 2027 for bachelor's and postgraduate coursework
Semester 2, 2027 12 to 16 July 19 July Dates not yet published

RMIT advises students who need a visa to apply and accept their offer at least four weeks before the course starts. In practice, the student visa needs more time than that, so aim to accept your offer well before January. Selected courses also run a Semester 3 from September to November.

Pathways into RMIT

If you do not yet meet direct entry, RMIT University Pathways runs Foundation Studies at the City campus, a one-semester Fast Track option, diplomas that can give credit towards an RMIT degree, and English programmes.

From offer to student visa

After you accept, RMIT issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which you upload to your ImmiAccount when you apply for the Student visa (subclass 500). You need Overseas Student Health Cover for the length of your course. Once your course starts, you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight during study periods. Our guides to the Genuine Student requirement and the Australia student visa document checklist cover the visa application, and how to apply to university in Australia explains each step from offer to CoE.

Applying from Sri Lanka

RMIT publishes a Sri Lanka equivalency table for GCE A/L results. It scores grades as A = 5, B = 4, C = 3 and S = 1, counting academic subjects only:

RMIT course entry score Minimum A/L result (3 subjects)
65% or 70% 9 points, for example CCC
75% 10 points, for example BCC
80% 11 points, for example BBC
85% 12 points, for example BBB
90% 13 points, for example ABB

Foundation Studies needs at least a C in two A/L subjects. Sri Lankan citizens are among those eligible for the 20% Future Leaders Scholarship. If you miss the February start, our Australia July intake guide shows how to plan for Semester 2.
