Study in Scotland for International Students: Applying from Sri Lanka

TL;DR: To study in Scotland from Sri Lanka, you use the same UCAS application, Student visa and Graduate route as the rest of the UK. Honours degrees usually take four years, but some universities offer year-two entry to applicants with strong results. Taught master's run about 12 months, and visa living costs use the lower outside-London rate.

Many families treat the UK as one system. Scotland shares the UK visa rules but runs its own degree structure, and that changes the maths. A four-year degree sounds like an extra year of fees, yet with advanced entry it can be three. How Scottish degrees differ

The University of Dundee's guide to Scottish degrees sets out the main differences:

• Four-year honours degrees. In England a bachelor's with honours usually takes three years. In Scotland it typically takes four.
• More breadth early on. The first two years usually let you try other subjects before you specialise.
• The Scottish MA is an undergraduate degree. Some Scottish universities award an MA as the first degree in arts and social sciences. It sits at the same level as a BA elsewhere in the UK. Do not mistake it for a postgraduate course.

At postgraduate level the gap disappears. The University of Aberdeen's MSc in Data Science, for example, runs for 12 months from September, or 16 months from January.

Advanced entry to year two

Some Scottish universities offer year-two entry to applicants with strong results. Entering year two means an honours degree in three years instead of four. Grade rules depend on your qualification, so check the entry page for your country on each university's site.

Aberdeen notes that advanced entry is not available for law, medicine or primary education.

What it costs compared with London

Here are the official figures a family can plan around.

The visa asks you to show up to nine months of living costs. From 30 November 2026 that is £10,827 outside London against £14,130 in London, a gap of just over £3,300 before rent differences. Our article on the UK student visa maintenance funds increase explains the change.

On advanced entry, skipping first year of a science degree at Aberdeen's current rate saves £24,800 in tuition, plus a year of living costs. Aberdeen says fees follow each year's advertised rate, so plan for increases.

Same visa, same Graduate route

Scotland uses the UK Student visa, with the same funds rules, CAS and credibility checks. After your degree, the UK Graduate route applies in the same way. The UK government says the Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. PhD graduates get 3 years.

For undergraduate study, you apply through UCAS like any UK university, and your Scottish university issues the CAS for your Student visa just as an English one would, once your offer is unconditional. For September 2027 entry, UCAS's deadline for most courses is 13 January 2027 at 6:00 PM UK time.

Choosing between Scottish universities by course

Scotland has 19 higher education institutions, according to Universities Scotland, so there is real choice by subject and city. Choose the course first, then the university. Check these four points:

1. Your qualification route. Does the university accept your school qualification directly, and does it offer year-two entry for your subject?

3. Start date. Some Scottish master's offer January starts. Our UK January intake timeline shows the steps.
4. City and rent. The visa figure is fixed, but real rent differs between cities, so check each university's accommodation costs and whether it guarantees a room for first-year international students before you accept an offer.

Applying from Sri Lanka

• Advanced entry is where a Sri Lankan applicant gains most. The University of Aberdeen's Sri Lanka entry page accepts the Sri Lanka Advanced Level and lists year-two entry. BSc and MA programmes need at least ABB, with at least an A in the subjects relevant to the degree. BEng and MEng programmes need at least AAB, with at least an A in maths and physics.
• The University of Edinburgh's Sri Lanka page also confirms it accepts the Sri Lankan G.C.E. A/L, with offers generally equivalent to its A-level requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Scottish degree recognised the same as an English one? Yes. Scottish universities award UK degrees. The Scottish MA is an undergraduate degree at the same level as a BA.

Can I finish a Scottish degree in three years with Sri Lankan A/Ls? At some universities, yes. Aberdeen offers year-two entry for many BSc and MA programmes with at least ABB and an A in the relevant subjects.

Is the visa different for Scotland? No. You apply for the same UK Student visa, using the outside-London living-cost rate.

How long is a taught master's in Scotland? Usually about 12 months full time. Aberdeen's MSc Data Science is 12 months from September.

Can I stay and work after graduating? Yes, on the UK Graduate route, if you meet its rules. The length depends on when you apply.
