October 30, 2026

TL;DR: Swinburne University of Technology is a public university in Melbourne whose Hawthorn campus takes international students into bachelor's and master's degrees. Its 2027 international fees on the course pages checked run from about AUD 45,910 to AUD 52,000 a year, and new students starting in 2027 are assessed automatically for scholarships of 20 or 30 percent off tuition. This guide covers the campus, intakes, 2027 fees, entry and English requirements, scholarships and pathway options, all taken from Swinburne's own pages. To see which course fits your background, check your eligibility with Prosper.

What is Swinburne University like for international students?

Swinburne University of Technology is an Australian public university registered with the national regulator, TEQSA, with the CRICOS provider code 00111D. International students study at its Hawthorn campus in Melbourne's inner east, which every course and scholarship page checked names as the study location. Swinburne stopped taking new intakes at its Sydney campus, so Hawthorn is the campus to plan around.

Two features stand out on Swinburne's own pages:

  • Industry experience: Swinburne says it guarantees real industry experience in all its bachelor degrees.
  • Rankings: it lists itself in the top 300 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026.

As a student visa holder you must study full time and on campus, which Swinburne repeats on its international pages.

Swinburne University intakes

Swinburne degrees start in Semester 1 (around early March), and many also offer Semester 2 (around early August). The Bachelor of Laws page, for example, lists a Semester 1 start on 1 March 2027 and a Semester 2 start on 2 August 2027. Not every course runs a mid-year intake, and Swinburne had not published general 2027 closing dates for international applicants at the time of writing, so apply three to four months ahead to leave time for your CoE and visa.

How do you apply to Swinburne?

You apply online to Swinburne, receive a letter of offer, accept it and pay the first payment, then receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the student visa. Our guides to how to apply to university in Australia, the Confirmation of Enrolment and the Genuine Student requirement walk through each step.

Applying from Sri Lanka

Swinburne's Sri Lanka page says the minimum for a bachelor's degree is typically 8 points across three subjects in the Sri Lankan GCE A/L, with higher minimums in some study areas. For postgraduate study it normally asks for a GPA of 2.0 or a grade C average. You can sit IELTS or PTE in Colombo (see our PTE exam guide). Fees are paid in Australian dollars, so plan the conversion from LKR with your bank before you accept the offer.

Team Prosper|Editorial Team
Team Prosper is the editorial desk at Prosper Global Education, the Colombo-based study abroad consultancy co-founded in 2023 by Lasantha Jayawardena and Sandeepani Wickramasinghe. Articles carry this byline when they report a policy update, a university announcement, or an intake change, rather than draw on either founder's first-hand experience of guiding students. The desk links to the primary government or university source behind every factual claim, and says plainly when a rule is still changing or a detail has not yet been confirmed. Requirements move, and an article that pretends otherwise is worth less than one that tells you what is settled and what is not. For guidance on a specific application, Prosper's counsellors work directly with students and families from the Colombo office.
