Top-Up Degree in the UK: Turn Your HND into a Bachelor's in One Year

October 07, 2026

TL;DR: A top-up degree in the UK is the final year of a bachelor's degree, designed for students who already hold an HND or 240 credits at Levels 4 and 5. It usually takes one year full time, asks for IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 or equivalent, and costs around £18,500 to £18,900 in tuition at the universities checked. You graduate with a full UK bachelor's (Hons), which also counts for the Graduate visa.

If you have an HND, you are closer to a UK degree than you might think. You do not start again in Year 1. The top-up turns two years of study you have already done into a full honours degree in twelve months, and it opens the door to a UK master's afterwards.

What a top-up degree is

A UK bachelor's degree is built from 360 credits: 120 at Level 4, 120 at Level 5 and 120 at Level 6. An HND covers the first two levels. A top-up is the Level 6 year, the final year, taught as a one-year course in its own right.

When you pass it, you receive the same BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) as students who studied all three years at that university. Top-ups are common in business, finance, computing, psychology and criminology. The University of Chichester, for example, runs international top-ups in nine subjects, from business and management to computing for business.

Entry requirements

Universities publish their own rules, but they follow a clear pattern:

Requirement What universities ask for Example
Prior study An HND, or the first two years of a relevant degree Northampton, International Banking and Finance (Top-Up)
Credits 240 credits: 120 at Level 4 and 120 at Level 5 Sheffield Hallam, International Business with Management (Top-up)
Subject match Your HND must relate to the top-up subject Most universities map your modules before an offer
English IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each skill, or equivalent Northampton and Sheffield Hallam
Duration One year full time Chichester, Northampton, Sheffield Hallam

The subject match matters more than students expect. A business HND fits a business or finance top-up. It does not fit a psychology or computing top-up, because you would be missing the Level 5 knowledge the final year assumes.

Fees and intakes

At the universities checked, international tuition for a top-up is £18,500 at Northampton for 2026 to 2027 and £18,900 a year at Sheffield Hallam. You pay for one year, not three, which is the main financial appeal.

The top-ups checked here start in September, so check whether your course also offers a January start. Sheffield Hallam's listing for the course starting 20 September 2027 shows an application deadline of 13 January 2027, so the next September intake is already open.

The visa side

A top-up is degree-level study, so it follows the normal Student visa rules: a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor, English at CEFR level B2, which your university can assess itself, and proof of funds.

After graduating, a UK bachelor's degree is one of the qualifications that counts for the Graduate visa. Because a top-up is usually 12 months or shorter, GOV.UK says you must have studied in the UK for the whole length of the course. Plan to be in the UK for the full year, not part of it online. For what the Graduate visa then allows, read our UK Graduate Route guide.

Is a top-up the right move?

A top-up is a strong choice when:

  • your HND is in the same field as the degree you want;
  • you want a UK honours degree for a UK master's or for employers who ask for a bachelor's;
  • you want to limit time and cost abroad to one year.

It is a weaker choice when your HND is in a different field, or when your grades were low, because your degree classification then rests on that one final year. Some universities reward a good result: Chichester guarantees a place on its postgraduate programmes for top-up students who achieve a 2:2 or above.

Ask the admissions team for a written credit mapping before you accept, so you know there is no gap to fill later. Before you pay a deposit, check that the university holds a student sponsor licence. Our guide on how to check a UK university's sponsor licence shows how.

Applying from Sri Lanka

HNDs taken in Sri Lanka, including Pearson BTEC HNDs offered through local colleges, are assessed by credits and level. Send the university your full transcript with module titles and credit values so it can map your study to Level 4 and Level 5 before it makes an offer. If your transcript does not show credits, ask your college for a letter that does, and keep a copy of the university's credit mapping with your visa documents in case you are asked about your study history.

FAQ

What is a top-up degree in the UK? The final year of a bachelor's degree, taken as a one-year course by students who already hold an HND or equivalent Level 5 study.

How long is a top-up degree? Usually one year full time.

Do I get a full bachelor's degree? Yes. You graduate with the same BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) as students who studied all three years.

What English score do I need for a top-up? Commonly IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each skill, or an equivalent the university accepts.

Can I get a Graduate visa after a top-up? A UK bachelor's degree counts, provided you studied in the UK for the whole length of the course.

Can I use a Sri Lankan HND for a UK top-up? Often yes, if the university maps it to 240 credits at Levels 4 and 5 in a related subject.

PS: The right top-up is the one that matches the HND you already have, because that is what keeps it to one year. If you want help matching your modules to the right course and intake, check your eligibility with Prosper.
