UCAS October Deadline: What Sri Lankan Applicants for Medicine, Oxford and Cambridge Must Finish

TL;DR: The UCAS October deadline is 15 October at 18:00 UK time, which is 22:30 in Sri Lanka. It applies to Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science starting next September. You can still apply while your A/L results are pending, but your school must send predicted grades, any admissions test must already be booked or done, and your personal statement must answer UCAS's three questions. If you sat the A/L in August and you are aiming for Oxford, Cambridge or a UK medical school, you have less time than your classmates. Most UK courses accept applications until January. These do not. Here is what has to be finished before 15 October, and what can wait.

What the UCAS October deadline covers

UCAS sets 15 October at 18:00 UK time as the equal consideration date for:

• the University of Oxford
• the University of Cambridge
• most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine or science

UCAS calls this cycle "2027 entry", meaning courses that start in September next year. For most other undergraduate courses, the equal consideration date is 13 January at 18:00 UK time.

"Equal consideration" means every application received by that time is treated the same. After it, universities are not required to consider you, and for these competitive courses most will not.

The time difference catches people out

18:00 in the UK in October is 22:30 in Sri Lanka, because the UK is still on summer time until late October. Do not plan to submit at 23:00 Colombo time thinking you have until midnight. Your school also has to add your reference and predicted grades before the application can be sent, so your real deadline is the date your school's UCAS coordinator gives you, which is usually earlier.

Can you apply with your A/L results still pending?

Yes. UK universities expect most applicants to apply before their final results are out. Your school provides predicted grades, and any offer you receive will be conditional on the grades you actually achieve.

Sri Lankan national A/Ls are accepted by Cambridge colleges. Christ's College Cambridge, for example, lists a typical offer of AAA in relevant subjects for applicants taking the Sri Lanka Advanced Levels. Requirements differ by course and university, so check each course page before you choose.

Two practical points for Sri Lankan applicants:

1. Ask for predicted grades early. Not every school in Sri Lanka issues UK-style predictions as a routine. Give your teachers time, and explain that UCAS needs them.

Your checklist before 15 October

Admissions tests are the real deadline

Many medicine and dentistry courses shortlist using the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Oxford's Medical Sciences Division uses the UCAT in its shortlisting, and the test is usually taken between July and September at Pearson VUE centres in the UK and more than 130 other countries. If you have not sat a required test by the end of its testing window, you cannot fix that before 15 October.

Other Oxford and Cambridge courses set their own tests or written work. Check the course page for exactly what applies to your subject.

The new personal statement format

The personal statement is now three separate questions:

1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

You have 4,000 characters in total, with at least 350 characters for each answer. For medicine, question three is where clinical shadowing, volunteering or caring roles belong. Be specific about what you did and what you learned.

What the application costs

For this cycle, the UCAS application fee is £34.50. That one payment covers up to five choices. Admissions tests carry their own fees.

If 15 October is too tight

Do not rush a weak application for a course that will reject it. If your test is not done or your statement is not ready, you have two sensible options:

• Apply to other courses by the 13 January deadline.
• Take a year to prepare properly and apply in the next cycle.
