University of Tasmania for International Students: Fees and Scholarships
TL;DR: The University of Tasmania suits international students who want an Australian degree with automatic scholarships and a regional post-study work benefit. For 2027, sample annual fees run from AUD 35,213 (MBA Global) to AUD 42,950 (Bachelor of Nursing). New students are assessed automatically for a 30 percent Merit Scholarship, and there is no application fee.
Picking an Australian university is usually a trade between cost, entry level and what happens after you graduate. This guide sets out the University of Tasmania (UTAS) numbers on all three so you can compare it fairly. Want a quick read on your chances? Check your eligibility with Prosper.
Is the University of Tasmania good for international students?
For students who want a recognised Australian degree with the option of studying in Tasmania, it is a strong option. UTAS has four campuses: Hobart, Launceston, Burnie (Cradle Coast) and Sydney. It also runs a Melbourne Study Centre with the Education Centre of Australia, at 655 Collins Street, Docklands, for selected business, IT and health management courses.
The biggest draw is after graduation. In September 2025 the university reported that eligible graduates who studied anywhere in Tasmania can get one extra year on the second Temporary Graduate visa stream. Study Australia confirms the second stream gives between one and two years, depending on where you studied and lived. Our guide to the Temporary Graduate visa 485 explains how the streams fit together.
University of Tasmania courses and fees for international students
These are the 2027 annual international fees listed on each course page:
| Course | 2027 annual fee | Indicative total | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master of Information Technology and Systems | AUD 41,950 | AUD 85,998 | Includes the Melbourne Study Centre |
| Master of Professional Accounting | AUD 39,450 | AUD 80,873 | Hobart and online |
| Master of Business Administration (Global) | AUD 35,213 | AUD 71,599 | Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney (Ultimo) |
| Bachelor of Nursing | AUD 42,950 | AUD 135,400 | All four campuses |
Two points to note. The MBA (Global) fee is based on 75 credit points a year, so the annual figure looks lower. And the Bachelor of Nursing has a Semester 1 intake only. If you are comparing courses across Australia, our guides to Australian tuition fees and the Master of Professional Accounting show where UTAS sits.
University of Tasmania scholarships for international students
UTAS has three main awards for new international students:
- Tasmanian International Merit Scholarship: a 30 percent reduction in tuition fees for the length of the course. Full-time undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students are assessed automatically when they apply.
- Tasmanian Access Scholarship: 20 percent off tuition, for up to five years, also assessed automatically.
- Tasmanian Aurora Excellence Scholarship: a 50 percent reduction for high achievers (a 90 ATAR or equivalent), by invitation, with a 300 to 500 word statement and an interview if shortlisted. Applications for Semester 1 2027 close on 15 November 2026, and for Semester 2 2027 on 30 April 2027.
A 30 percent Merit Scholarship on the Master of Information Technology and Systems would bring the 2027 fee from AUD 41,950 to about AUD 29,365 a year.
University of Tasmania entry requirements
Undergraduate. UTAS publishes entry rules by country. Its benchmark is equivalent to Australian Year 12, and some courses ask for more. If you fall short, the International Pathway College, delivered by UP Education at Sandy Bay in Hobart, offers Foundation Studies, first-year diplomas that lead into second year, and a Pre-Masters program into the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics.
English language. Results are generally valid for two years.

|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 6.0, no band below 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 50, none below 42 | 50, none below 50 |

Some courses ask for more: undergraduate Nursing needs IELTS 7.0 with no band below 7.0, or PTE 65, and Education needs IELTS 7.5. UTAS only accepts TOEFL iBT results from tests taken before 26 July 2023. If your score is short, ten weeks of English for Academic Purposes can lead into your degree. Our Australia student visa English requirements guide covers the visa side.
How to apply to the University of Tasmania
UTAS does not charge an application fee, and most courses have no closing date. It advises overseas applicants to apply at least five months before the semester starts, and says a decision takes one to two weeks. Semester 1 runs from February to June and Semester 2 from July to October.
After you accept your offer, you pay your deposit, arrange Overseas Student Health Cover and receive your Confirmation of Enrolment. Our step-by-step guide on how to apply to university in Australia walks through each stage, and you will also need to answer the Genuine Student questions on your visa application.
Applying from Sri Lanka
UTAS lists the Sri Lankan GCE Advanced Level for undergraduate entry. It asks for a minimum score of 7, calculated from two or three subjects, where A counts as 5, B as 4, C as 3, D as 2 and E as 1. Three C passes (9) or two B passes (8) clear the minimum, but check your course, as some ask for more. Sri Lankan applicants still need an English test unless the university confirms an exemption for your course.
