Is the University of Western Australia worth it for international students?

For a student who meets the entry bar, the case is strong. UWA is a member of the Group of Eight, Australia's research-intensive universities, and its main campus is in Crawley, Perth. Its Master of Professional Engineering is accredited by Engineers Australia across nine specialisations, three Master of Information Technology specialisations are accredited by the Australian Computer Society, and its Business School holds AACSB and EQUIS accreditation.

The trade-off is cost. UWA sits at the higher end of Australian fees, so the scholarship and the course choice matter more here than at a lower-fee university.

University of Western Australia scholarships: the Global Excellence Scholarship

The Global Excellence Scholarship is open to students from every country with an offer for an eligible course, and UWA's FAQ says it covers the 2027 to 2029 intakes. There is no separate application: admissions applies it once final results are in.

It runs for the normal full-time length of the course but cannot be combined with other UWA fee reductions. Medicine, dentistry, optometry, the Juris Doctor and micro-credentials are excluded.

University of Western Australia entry requirements

UWA states master's entry as a bachelor's degree with a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) or its equivalent.

English. The standard requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, PTE Academic 64 with no band below 60, or TOEFL iBT 82. Some courses use a higher standard of IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5. Results are valid for two years.

Pathway. If you are short of direct entry, UWA College, run in partnership with INTO on the Perth campus, offers a Foundation Program, diplomas in Commerce, Computer and Data Science and Engineering that lead into the second year of a degree, and a Pre-Masters. A Pre-Masters result of WAM 50 or above meets entry for the Master of Data Science and Master of Information Technology.

Sri Lanka is on UWA's list of countries with earlier closing dates: 21 December 2026 for Semester 1 2027 and 17 May 2027 for Semester 2 2027, on UWA's international applicants page. Another UWA page shows 28 December 2026 and 24 May 2027, so work to the earlier dates. UWA does not publish a fixed A/L grade table for Sri Lanka and assesses overseas qualifications individually. Your degree transcript is converted to a WAM equivalent, which also decides the 10% or 20% scholarship.
