Documents Required for a Master's in the UK: The Stage-by-Stage Checklist
TL;DR: The documents required for a master's in the UK come in two waves. To apply, you usually need transcripts (interim if you are still studying), a personal statement, a reference, English language evidence, and a CV or portfolio only where the course asks. After the offer come your degree certificate and pre-CAS checks, then the visa adds your passport, CAS, financial evidence, and a TB test or ATAS certificate where they apply.
Most delays are not caused by a missing grade. They come from a document sent at the wrong stage, a transcript without a grading scale, or a late reference. The University of Leeds, King's College London, Alliance Manchester Business School and the University of Birmingham each ask for slightly different things, so the table below sorts every common document by stage. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local steps are near the end.

What documents do you need to apply for a master's in the UK?
- Transcripts and certificate. Leeds asks for your degree certificate and transcripts, or an interim transcript if you are still studying. Birmingham wants official transcripts in English showing subjects and grades. Leeds and Alliance Manchester Business School also ask for your grading scale if the transcript does not make it clear.
- Personal statement. King's requires one. Alliance Manchester Business School asks for a statement of purpose of "no more than one page". Our guide to the statement of purpose for a master's covers what to put in it.
- References. King's asks for "one reference contact email", usually academic, and a department may ask for a second. Leeds may accept a professional referee if you have been out of education for more than five years. Alliance Manchester Business School may request one after a first review. See our guide to the letter of recommendation for a master's.
- English language evidence. King's lets you send results later. Alliance Manchester Business School will not decide until it has them.
- CV, portfolio or writing sample. Course-specific. Alliance Manchester Business School asks for a CV only with more than two years of postgraduate work experience.
- Passport and previous UK visas. Alliance Manchester Business School asks Student visa applicants for a passport copy. Leeds asks former UK Student visa holders for their previous visa, BRP and CAS.

The stage-by-stage document checklist
Each row shows the first point at which the document is normally needed.
| Document | When you need it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Transcripts (interim or final) | Application | Add the grading scale and any certified translation |
| Personal statement or statement of purpose | Application | Check the length limit on the course page |
| Reference or referee contact details | Application, or later on request | Usually academic |
| English test result or waiver evidence | Application, or as an offer condition | Some universities wait for it |
| CV, portfolio or writing sample | Application, where the course asks | Only if requested |
| Passport copy and previous UK visa documents | Application, at some universities | Past visa, BRP and CAS if relevant |
| Degree certificate and final transcript | Offer (to meet conditions) | Upload as soon as issued |
| Deposit and pre-CAS checks | Offer to CAS | May cover study gaps and past refusals |
| ATAS certificate | Before the visa | Only if your course and nationality require it |
| Passport, CAS and financial evidence | Visa | Funds rules vary by circumstance |
| TB test result | Visa | Only for listed countries |
Alliance Manchester Business School asks for each document as a separate, clearly titled file. That is a good rule everywhere.
What happens after the offer?
A conditional offer lists what you still owe. Birmingham's examples are your degree certificate, English test results and a reference. Your offer letter sets the deadline.
Before issuing a CAS, universities run pre-CAS checks. The University of Sunderland, for example, asks applicants with a refusal from the UK or any other country to declare it and upload the related documents, and may ask about a study gap. Declare refusals in full. Our guide to the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) explains what to check once it arrives.
Which documents does the Student visa add?
GOV.UK lists a current passport and a CAS for every applicant. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need evidence of money, an ATAS certificate "if your course and nationality require it", tuberculosis test results, and written consent from a financial sponsor who paid your costs in the last 12 months. Start the TB test and ATAS early, since both depend on outside bodies.
Applying from Sri Lanka
- Request official transcripts and your degree certificate from your university well before your deadline, or an interim transcript if you are still studying.
- Ask your university for a document explaining its grading scale.
- If any document is in Sinhala or Tamil, attach a certified English translation alongside the original.
- For the visa stage, GOV.UK lists IOM Sri Lanka in Colombo 08 as the approved TB test clinic. Bring your visa passport, photo ID, two recent colour passport photographs and your UK and Sri Lanka addresses. Our IOM Colombo TB test guide covers booking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a UK master's before I graduate? Yes. Leeds, King's and Alliance Manchester Business School accept an interim transcript. Your degree certificate then becomes an offer condition.
How many references do I need for a UK master's? It varies. King's asks for one and may request a second. Alliance Manchester Business School does not require one at application.
Do I need a CV for a master's application? Only where the course asks for one.
Is there an application fee? It depends. King's charges a non-refundable fee on most taught courses. Birmingham charges none.
Do I need a TB test to apply to the university? No. GOV.UK lists it as a Student visa document, needed depending on where you live.
PS: The smoothest applications are rarely the ones with the most paperwork. Every file is labelled, every transcript has its grading scale, and every referee knows a request is coming. An hour sorting your folder now saves weeks later. Check your eligibility with Prosper and we will walk through your list with you.
