What is the Eastern Institute of Technology?
EIT is an institute of technology and polytechnic. It merged with Tairāwhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne in 2011 and spent about three years as a business division of Te Pūkenga, the national polytechnic network. The Ministry of Education confirms that EIT has run as an independent institution since 1 January 2026.
EIT teaches on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), from diplomas at Level 5 to bachelor's degrees at Level 7 and master's degrees at Level 9. See New Zealand qualification levels, and our steps to check a New Zealand education provider.

See student visa requirements and work hours. INZ states that a Level 7 degree, or a Level 8 to 10 qualification, studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can lead to a post-study work visa. Online study from overseas does not count toward this.

Applying from Sri Lanka
- Results: EIT publishes no A/L grade for Sri Lanka, so confirm with EIT how your A/L results meet degree standard entry.
- Funding: INZ says citizens of Sri Lanka applying from South Asia can be sponsored only by immediate family. Sri Lankan citizens may also use INZ's Funds Transfer Scheme.
- Chest X-ray: Sri Lanka is not on INZ's low TB incidence list, so an X-ray is generally needed for stays over six months.
