New Zealand Student Visa Requirements: The Documents to Prepare and When

October 15, 2026

TL;DR: New Zealand student visa requirements come down to five things: a full offer of place, proof your tuition is paid, NZD 20,000 a year for living costs, a health and character check where needed, and insurance. Immigration New Zealand says to apply at least three months before you travel, because 80 percent of Fee Paying Student Visa decisions take up to seven weeks.

Most New Zealand student visa delays start with a document that was right but arrived at the wrong time: a chest X-ray that went stale, a police certificate too old to use, or an offer that was still conditional. This guide lists what Immigration New Zealand (INZ) asks for on the Fee Paying Student Visa, and when to get each piece. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local points are in their own section before the FAQ.

New Zealand student visa requirements at a glance

INZ's Fee Paying Student Visa page says you must hold an offer from an approved education provider, have enough money for tuition and living costs, be in good health and of good character, have a genuine reason to study, show you can leave at the end of your stay, and hold acceptable medical and travel insurance. The visa fee starts from NZD 850.

Document What INZ asks for When to get it
Passport A clear scan of the photo page, valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave New Zealand Renew first if it is close to expiry
Photo One photo that meets INZ's standards With your application
Offer of place Course name, length, full-time status, holiday dates, and the provider's declaration on your English and academic ability You can apply with a conditional offer, but you need an unconditional one before approval

Living funds NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary study, or NZD 1,667 a month for courses under a year Ready before you apply

The documents people get wrong

The offer of place. INZ wants more than an acceptance letter. It must show your course details, holiday dates for courses over one year, and a declaration from the provider that the course suits you and that you have the English and academic ability to pass. INZ says no English test is mandatory for the visa itself. Test results are optional extra evidence.

Your funds. INZ accepts bank statements, a scholarship, an education loan sanction letter or fixed-term deposits. If someone else is paying, they can complete a Financial Undertaking for a Student (form INZ 1014). INZ also says a credible plan to pay for later years of study, such as evidence of family income, strengthens your application. Our guide to New Zealand student visa funds covers how to show this.

Timing of health and character documents. These have expiry windows. An X-ray must be less than three months old when INZ receives it, and police certificates less than six months old when you apply. Book them once your offer and money are settled, not months earlier. Our chest X-ray guide explains who needs one.

When to apply

INZ asks offshore students to apply at least three months before they plan to travel, and says processing is busiest from October to March. It currently decides 80 percent of Fee Paying Student Visa applications within seven weeks. If you are six months or more ahead, INZ's approval in principle can move your visa forward before every final step is done.

Applications that are missing key documents may be declined, and INZ may not contact you about what is missing. Our article on New Zealand student visa rejection reasons covers the patterns to avoid. For the full cost picture, see New Zealand student visa cost.

What the visa allows once you have it

INZ says the Fee Paying Student Visa can last up to four years, normally matching the period you have paid for. You can work up to 25 hours a week during study, and full time in scheduled holidays if your course is worth 120 credits or more. Partners and children cannot be included in your application, but they can apply separately. Our guide to New Zealand student visa work hours explains the limits.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka is not on INZ's list of countries with a low incidence of tuberculosis, so students staying more than six months need a chest X-ray from an approved panel physician.
  • INZ says that in South Asia, only immediate family can act as an individual financial sponsor.
  • IOM Sri Lanka offers a document verification service for New Zealand applicants. Our guide to IOM document verification explains it.
  • INZ asks for certified English translations of any police certificate that is not in English.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a New Zealand student visa? A passport, a photo, an offer of place, proof of tuition payment, proof of living funds, onward travel evidence, and a chest X-ray, police certificate and insurance where they apply to you.

How much money do I need for a New Zealand student visa? INZ asks for NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary study, or NZD 1,667 a month for courses under a year, on top of your tuition.

Do I need IELTS for a New Zealand student visa? Not for the visa itself. INZ relies on your provider's declaration about your English. Your university will still set its own English entry requirement.

Can I apply with a conditional offer? Yes, from outside New Zealand. You will need an unconditional offer before your visa can be approved.

Do I need a chest X-ray for New Zealand if I apply from Sri Lanka? Yes, if you will stay more than six months, because Sri Lanka is not on INZ's low-incidence list.

PS: A New Zealand application rewards order more than speed. Getting the offer final, the money ready and the X-ray booked in the right weeks is what keeps it moving. If you want help lining those up for your intake, check your eligibility with Prosper.
