IELTS for UKVI vs IELTS Academic: Which One Your UK Course Needs
TL;DR: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Academic are the same test with the same scores. The difference is where you sit it and what it can be used for. For a degree at a UK university, the university can assess your English itself, so standard IELTS Academic is often enough. Below degree level, the Home Office needs an approved Secure English Language Test, such as IELTS for UKVI.
Students lose time and money on this question in two ways. Some pay for IELTS for UKVI when their university would have accepted the standard test. Others take standard IELTS Academic for a foundation or pathway course, then find it cannot be used for the visa. If you are choosing between IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Academic from Sri Lanka, the fees and test cities are near the end. The rule underneath is short, and the table below applies it.

What is the difference between IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Academic?
The test itself does not change. The British Council says IELTS for UKVI has the same design, format and difficulty as standard IELTS, and is scored the same way. Three things are different:
- Where you sit it. IELTS for UKVI must be taken at a UK Home Office approved test centre, with additional security measures in place.
- The paperwork. Your Test Report Form carries UKVI-specific information.
- What it counts for. IELTS for UKVI is on the Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). Standard IELTS Academic is not.
GOV.UK's SELT guidance, last updated on 12 October 2026, names "IELTS for UKVI" and "IELTS Life Skills" as the approved IELTS tests. The other approved providers are LanguageCert, Pearson (PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home), PSI (Skills for English UKVI) and Trinity College London. GOV.UK says SELT results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded.

When standard IELTS Academic is enough
GOV.UK's Student visa guidance sets the English level at CEFR B2 for courses at degree level or above, and CEFR B1 below degree level. At degree level, it says your higher education provider can assess your level of English itself, and may ask you to take a different test, as long as the level is equal to B2.
That is why many UK universities accept standard IELTS Academic for bachelor's and master's offers. The British Council lists "IELTS or IELTS for UKVI" for degree-level study, with at least 5.5 in each of the four parts. Below degree level, it lists IELTS for UKVI only, with at least 4.0 in each part.
The university's own entry score is usually higher than the visa minimum. For example, a master's offer that asks for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is the number you need to meet, whichever version you sit.
Which test do you need? A quick decision table
| Your situation | Test to book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's or master's at a UK university, offer accepts IELTS Academic | IELTS Academic | The university assesses English at degree level |
| Your offer letter or CAS asks for a SELT or "IELTS for UKVI" | IELTS for UKVI | The university has chosen to rely on a SELT |
| Foundation, pathway or other course below degree level | IELTS for UKVI | Below degree level needs an approved SELT |
| Pre-sessional English before your degree | Check with the university | Rules differ by course and CAS; see our pre-sessional guide |
| You have not chosen a university yet | IELTS for UKVI | It is accepted for both university entry and the visa |
The last row is a safety choice, not a rule. It costs more, so book it only when you genuinely cannot confirm what your university accepts.
Before you book: three checks
- Read your offer, not the course page. The offer letter states the exact test and scores the university will accept for you.
- Check the date. Your result must still be valid when the university issues your CAS and when you apply for your visa.
- Look at the alternatives. Some universities accept other tests or an English-medium degree. Our guides to PTE Academic UKVI and the Duolingo English Test for UK universities explain when each one works.
Applying from Sri Lanka
- British Council Sri Lanka lists IELTS Academic on computer at LKR 77,000 and IELTS for UKVI Academic on computer at LKR 85,600, effective from 9 June 2026.
- Test centres are listed in Colombo, Kandy, Malabe, Negombo, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Matara and Batticaloa. Check which ones run UKVI sessions when you book.
- If your degree was taught in English, some UK universities waive the test. Our guide to studying in the UK without IELTS covers how waivers work.
