PTE Academic UKVI: When You Need It for a UK Student Visa
TL;DR: PTE Academic UKVI is the version of PTE you need when the Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT), usually for a pre-sessional course on its own CAS or a course below degree level. It is the same test as PTE Academic, taken at an approved centre with a reference number for your visa. For a degree-level course, your university can often assess your English itself, so the regular PTE Academic is usually enough.
Many students book the UKVI version just to be safe, then find their university never needed it. Others book the regular test and later learn their pre-sessional course needs a SELT. Both mistakes cost time. The rule is simpler than it looks once you know which level you are studying at.

When you need PTE Academic UKVI
The Immigration Rules set two English levels for a Student visa. You need CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening for a course at bachelor's degree level or above, and B1 for a pre-sessional course or a course below degree level.
How you prove that level depends on the course:
| Your course | Test you usually need | PTE score to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Degree level or above, university assesses your English | Regular PTE Academic, if the university accepts it | The university's own minimum |
| Degree level, university asks for a SELT | PTE Academic UKVI | 59 or higher in each section (B2) |
| Pre-sessional course on its own CAS | PTE Academic UKVI | 43 or higher in each section (B1) |
| Course below degree level | PTE Academic UKVI | 43 or higher in each section (B1) |
The score bands come from Pearson's guidance on UK visas.

When regular PTE Academic is enough
GOV.UK says that if you are studying at degree level or above, your higher education provider can assess your level of English itself. The rules allow this when the university has a track record of compliance and states how it assessed you on your CAS. That is why most students going straight into a bachelor's or master's do not need the UKVI version.
Each university sets its own PTE scores. Two examples:
- University of Leeds: 60 overall with at least 59 in each component for undergraduate study, and 64 overall with at least 60 in each component for master's. It accepts PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI, but not PTE Academic Online.
- University of Birmingham: 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills for its main undergraduate group, and it accepts PTE Academic Online for 2026 entry.
Pearson itself advises choosing the regular PTE Academic for degree-level university applications. If your course starts with a pre-sessional, read our guide to the pre-sessional English course first, because a combined CAS changes the rules.
How PTE Academic UKVI works
- Same test, different booking. Pearson says the content, format and scoring are the same as PTE Academic. The UKVI version adds a Unique Reference Number (URN) that lets the Home Office check your result.
- Test centre only. It cannot be taken at home, and the result must come from an approved test location. Check the list of approved SELT test centres on GOV.UK before you pay.
- Results and validity. Most results arrive within two business days, sometimes up to five. A SELT result is valid for two years.
What about HOELT?
The Home Office is buying a new Home Office English Language Test (HOELT). Its tender shows a contract running from 1 December 2026, but no date has been set for it to replace current tests, and GOV.UK still lists PTE Academic UKVI as approved. Our HOELT guide tracks what is confirmed.
Applying from Sri Lanka
Before you book, check that the centre you choose appears on the GOV.UK approved list for Sri Lanka and is listed for PTE Academic UKVI, not only the regular test. Some UK universities also accept a strong O/L English result or an English-medium degree instead of a test, so read our guide to English waiver routes first.
FAQ
What is the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI?
The test is the same. PTE Academic UKVI is taken at an approved centre and carries a Unique Reference Number so the Home Office can verify your result.
What PTE score do I need for a UK Student visa?
For B2, 59 or higher in each section. For B1, which applies to pre-sessional and below-degree courses, 43 or higher in each section. Your university may ask for more.
Do I need PTE Academic UKVI for a master's in the UK?
Usually not. If you go straight into a master's, the university can assess your English and many accept the regular PTE Academic. Check your offer letter.
Can I take PTE Academic UKVI from Sri Lanka?
Only at a centre approved for it. Check the GOV.UK list of approved test centres before you book.
Is HOELT replacing PTE Academic UKVI?
Not yet. No replacement date has been announced, and PTE Academic UKVI remains an approved SELT.
PS: The right English test depends on your course, your university and whether a pre-sessional is involved. If you want us to check that before you spend money on the wrong test, check your eligibility with Prosper.
