MSc Human Resource Management in the UK: How CIPD Accreditation Shapes Your Choice
TL;DR: Should your MSc Human Resource Management in the UK be CIPD accredited? If you want an HR career, usually yes. A CIPD-accredited master's leads to Associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development when you finish, and to Chartered membership once you have the experience. Most one-year courses accept graduates from any subject or from social science and business, ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, and charge international students between about £19,400 and £33,200.
HR is one of the few master's fields where a professional body shapes the degree itself. Two courses with the same title can lead to different outcomes: one carries CIPD recognition, another does not. This guide explains what accreditation gives you, compares four UK courses side by side, and shows how to choose for your background. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local points are near the end.

What CIPD accreditation gives you
The CIPD is the UK professional body for HR and people development. It accredits university programmes, and says that after a postgraduate course "you'll initially become an Associate Member with the option to upgrade to Chartered depending on your experience". Associate membership (Assoc CIPD) can also be reached through its Level 7 Advanced Diploma, which an accredited master's covers.
Chartered status (MCIPD) needs experience as well as the degree. The CIPD's upgrade route is open to Associate Members with an accredited postgraduate diploma or master's and "at least one year of experience working at Chartered Member level". So the master's opens the door, and your work after it decides how far through you go.
One cost sits outside the tuition fee. The CIPD says that to assess your work "you'll need to be in active membership throughout your studies". Student membership for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 is £118, plus a one-off joining fee of £40. Strathclyde notes that membership is not needed to pass the degree, but you need it to gain Associate status at the end.
Four UK courses compared
| University | Fee (international) | Length and start | Degree needed | IELTS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Leeds, MSc Human Resource Management | £33,200 total (2027 entry) | 12 months, September 2027 | 2:1, usually in a social science; other subjects considered | 6.5, no part below 6.0 |
| University of Strathclyde, MSc Human Resource Management | £30,950 (2026/27) | 12 months, September | 2:2 or above in a social science or business subject | 6.5, no part below 5.5 |
| Leeds Beckett University, MSc Human Resource Management | £19,415 (2027/28) | 12 months, September 2027 | Second class honours, or CIPD Level 5 | 6.0, no skill below 5.5 |
| University of Exeter, MSc Human Resource Management | £31,300 (2027 entry) | January 2027 or September 2027 | 2:2 or above in any discipline | Profile B1 (see the course page) |
All four are CIPD accredited. Strathclyde's international scholarship of £8,000 for offer holders lowers its fee, and its MSc International Human Resource Management, also accredited, accepts a degree in any subject. Fees and requirements change each year, so check the course page for your intake.
Want a second opinion on which HR course fits your degree and budget?
Accredited or not: what changes
Not every course with HR in its title carries CIPD recognition. Strathclyde's MSc Human Resource Management and People Analytics lists its business school accreditations, but its course page does not mention the CIPD. That can suit someone heading into HR analytics or consulting. For a generalist HR role, accreditation is the safer choice, because employers can see the professional standard you were taught to. Ask the university directly if its page is unclear, and check the CIPD's Centre Finder.
Which course type fits your background?
| Your background | Course type to look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Social science or business degree, little work experience | CIPD-accredited MSc HRM | Meets most entry rules; Associate membership on completion |
| Degree in another subject, such as science or IT | Accredited courses open to any discipline (Exeter, Strathclyde International HRM) | Same recognition without a subject barrier |
| Already working in HR, with a CIPD Level 5 | Courses that accept CIPD Level 5 (Leeds Beckett) | Your professional qualification counts towards entry |
| Interested in data and workforce analytics | HRM with people analytics | Check CIPD status before you commit |
| Budget is the main limit | Lower-fee accredited courses | The CIPD outcome is the same at different fee levels |

Applying from Sri Lanka
- If you completed a CIPD Level 5 at a local centre, Leeds Beckett accepts it in place of a degree; check that your centre appears on the CIPD's Centre Finder.
- Some UK universities accept English-medium study or O/L English in place of IELTS. Our guide to studying in the UK without IELTS lists the routes, including O/L C pass, A/L S pass, English-medium degrees and UK degrees.
- Budget for the CIPD student membership in pounds on top of tuition, as it is paid to the CIPD, not the university.
Frequently asked questions
Is a CIPD-accredited master's the same as being Chartered?
No. It leads to Associate membership. Chartered membership also needs at least one year of experience at Chartered Member level.
Can I do an MSc HRM in the UK without an HR degree?
Yes. Exeter accepts a 2:2 in any discipline, and Leeds considers degrees in other subjects.
How long is an MSc Human Resource Management in the UK?
Usually 12 months full time, starting in September, with some courses also starting in January.
PS: Students who choose well check two things before the fee: CIPD status and the entry rule for their degree subject. Shortlist three accredited courses this week. Check your eligibility with Prosper and we will help you compare them.
