MSc Marketing UK: How to Choose the Right Course Type for Your Degree

October 21, 2026

TL;DR: Which MSc Marketing in the UK should you choose? Match the course type to your first degree and goal: MSc Marketing and Marketing Management courses at Exeter and Bristol accept any discipline, while some International Marketing courses expect a business background. Many are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), which cuts the assessments needed for a CIM qualification later. International fees on the 2027 entry pages checked today run from £27,000 to £34,500.

"Marketing" on a UK course list covers several different degrees. Some suit graduates who have never studied business, some assume the basics, and some lean into digital channels or data.

This guide sets out the four course types, explains CIM exemptions, compares five courses from the universities' own pages, and ends with four checks before you accept an offer. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local points are near the end.

What are the main types of MSc Marketing in the UK?

  • MSc Marketing: broad strategy, consumer behaviour and brand. Bristol's page says "No prior study in marketing or business is required."
  • MSc Marketing Management: often a conversion route for graduates from other fields. Exeter asks for "a 2:2 Honours degree or above in any discipline."
  • MSc International Marketing: marketing across markets. Some assume prior study: LSBU says its course suits applicants whose "first degree is business-related with some knowledge of marketing."
  • MSc Digital Marketing or Marketing Analytics: channels, platforms and data. UEA's Digital Marketing course accepts "Any subject area."

What does CIM accreditation actually give you?

An accredited degree counts towards a CIM qualification. In CIM's words, "Exemptions reduce the number of assessments you take," and graduates can use them "up to five years after graduating from university."

CIM's exemptions page says graduates of approved degrees need "One CIM module to gain the CIM Certificate in Professional Marketing/Digital Marketing" and "Two modules to complete the CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing/Digital Marketing." To claim them you must be "registered with The Marketing Club or hold membership with CIM." The remaining modules are extra study with their own fees.

Universities word this differently. Exeter ties exemptions to an overall Pass or higher. LSBU says graduates entering the Professional Diploma "within two years of graduating" are exempt from half its modules. Read the exact line on your course page.

What should you check before accepting an offer?

  • The fee year. Confirm the offer letter fee is for your entry year, not the year before.
  • The CIM wording. Which CIM levels, what grade you need, and the time limit.
  • The course length. A 9 month and a 12 month version end at different times, which affects your visa dates.
  • The English profile. Exeter and Bristol use profile codes, so open the profile page and check each component. IELTS waivers may be available; confirm in writing.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Each UK university sets its own equivalence for local degrees, so check its country page for what counts as a 2:1 or 2:2 before you shortlist.
  • Book an IELTS date in Colombo that leaves time for a resit before your offer deadline.
  • Tuition is charged in pounds sterling. Ask your bank early how long a transfer to a UK university takes, and keep the receipt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do an MSc Marketing in the UK without a business degree?
Yes, on many courses. Exeter, Bristol and UEA accept any discipline. Some International Marketing courses ask for a related degree.

Does a CIM accredited masters make me CIM qualified?
No. It gives exemptions, so you take fewer CIM assessments later, within five years of graduating.

What are the entry requirements for an MSc International Marketing in the UK?
They vary. LSBU asks for a lower second in a related subject and IELTS 6.5. Leeds, on its 2026 entry page, asks for a 2:1 in any subject and IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component.

PS: Before comparing fees, set your degree class and subject beside each course's entry line; that rules courses in or out fastest. Check your eligibility with Prosper, and we will tell you which course types fit.
