New Zealand Pathway Student Visa: Up to Three Courses on One Visa

September 30, 2026

TL;DR: The New Zealand Pathway Student Visa lets you study up to three programmes, one after another, on a single visa for up to five years, with an approved pathway provider. Since 20 July, pathways can include English, foundation and certificate study, first-time holders can spend up to 30 weeks on English, and the visa names the qualification type and provider rather than the exact subject.

Many international students do not go to New Zealand for one course. They go for a sequence: English study, then a foundation or diploma year, then a bachelor's degree. Until recently, each step could mean another visa application, another round of documents and another wait.

The Pathway Student Visa is Immigration New Zealand's answer to that. It is not new, but the changes that took effect on 20 July make it far more useful for students who start below degree level, and few families have heard of it.

What the New Zealand Pathway Student Visa is

Immigration New Zealand describes the Pathway Student Visa as a way to study up to three programmes, one after the other, on a single visa, and to stay for up to five years. The courses must be part of a planned study pathway, and they must be with an approved pathway provider.

Approved providers include the University of Auckland, Massey University, the University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington, among others on Immigration New Zealand's list.

While studying, Pathway Student Visa holders can work part time for up to 25 hours a week during study and full time in scheduled holidays, the same weekly limit covered in our guide to New Zealand student visa work hours.

You still need to meet the normal requirements. Immigration New Zealand is clear that every applicant must meet health and character requirements and show that they are a genuine student.

What changed on 20 July

Immigration New Zealand announced four improvements, effective from 20 July. Three matter for the students we work with.

Change Before Now Why it matters
Lower-level study in the pathway NZQCF levels 1 to 4 were not covered Pathways can include NZQCF levels 1 to 4: English, foundation programmes and vocational certificates A foundation year can now sit inside the same visa as your degree
English study for first-time holders Up to 20 weeks Up to 30 weeks before the main qualification More time to reach the English level your degree needs
What the visa conditions name Qualification and discipline, for example "Bachelor of Science at University of Auckland" Qualification type and provider only, for example "Bachelor's degree at University of Auckland" You can change your subject within that degree type without a new visa

The fourth change applies to secondary school students, which is outside the age group Prosper works with.

Who it suits, and who it does not

The Pathway Student Visa is a strong fit for some students and unnecessary for others. The question is whether you need more than one programme to reach your goal.

It usually suits you if:

  • Your English score is below your degree's requirement and you need a period of English study first.
  • Your school results or subject mix point to a foundation year before a bachelor's degree.
  • You plan a diploma first and then a degree with the same provider.
  • You are sure of the degree level but less sure of the exact subject, and want room to adjust.

A standard student visa is usually enough if:

  • You already meet the entry and English requirements for your degree.
  • You are applying for a single master's or postgraduate diploma.
  • Your chosen institution is not an approved pathway provider.

In our experience, the students who gain most are those who would otherwise apply for two or three visas in a row. One well-planned application replaces several.

How to plan a pathway application

A pathway works only if every step is planned from the start. Before you apply, make sure you can answer these questions:

  1. Is the provider approved? Check the provider against Immigration New Zealand's pathway list.
  2. Does each step lead to the next? The programmes must form a planned study pathway, not a set of unrelated courses.
  3. Can you fund the whole plan? Budget for every programme, not only the first. Our guide to New Zealand student visa funds explains the living cost evidence Immigration New Zealand asks for.
  4. Is your timeline realistic? Allow at least 12 to 15 weeks from starting your application to a visa decision. If February is your target, our article on the New Zealand February intake from Sri Lanka sets out the dates.

The subject flexibility is useful, but it is not a reason to delay choosing. A clear first choice still makes a stronger genuine student case.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lankan students can apply. Immigration New Zealand does not limit the Pathway Student Visa by nationality.
  • If your A/L results or subject mix point to a foundation year before a bachelor's degree, a pathway usually suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students of any nationality apply? Yes. Immigration New Zealand does not limit it by nationality. You must meet health, character and genuine student requirements.

How long can I study English on it? First-time Pathway Student Visa holders can spend up to 30 weeks on English study before their main qualification, up from 20 weeks.

Team Prosper is the editorial desk at Prosper Global Education, the Colombo-based study abroad consultancy co-founded in 2023 by Lasantha Jayawardena and Sandeepani Wickramasinghe. Articles carry this byline when they report a policy update, a university announcement, or an intake change, rather than draw on either founder's first-hand experience of guiding students. The desk links to the primary government or university source behind every factual claim, and says plainly when a rule is still changing or a detail has not yet been confirmed. Requirements move, and an article that pretends otherwise is worth less than one that tells you what is settled and what is not. For guidance on a specific application, Prosper's counsellors work directly with students and families from the Colombo office.
