UCAS January Deadline: What International Applicants Need Ready by 13 January
TL;DR: The UCAS January deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027 at 6:00 PM UK time, which is 11:30 PM in Colombo. It is the equal consideration date for most UK undergraduate courses, so applications in by then are reviewed on the same footing. Universities can accept international applicants later, but popular courses fill. Aim to submit with a margin, because your school reference must be added before UCAS receives the application.
Most UK undergraduate courses share one main deadline, and for 2027 entry it falls on 13 January. If you are applying from outside the UK, it is easy to read the international flexibility in UCAS's rules and assume January does not matter. For the courses most students want, it does.
This guide explains what the January deadline means, what must be ready before you press submit and how to plan the weeks before it.

What equal consideration means
UCAS explains that applications arriving by the equal consideration date are treated the same way as every other application received by that date. Its deadline notice says applications for all 2027 entry undergraduate courses, except those with a 15 October deadline, "should arrive at UCAS by 18:00 (UK time) on 13 January 2027".
After that date, universities are not obliged to consider your application. They may still do so if places remain once they have assessed the on-time applications.
Is January a real deadline for international applicants?
Partly. UCAS says universities "will continue to accept applications from international students until later in the year, nearer the beginning of the course". That flexibility is real, and it helps students who decide late.
But it applies only where places remain. Competitive courses at well-known universities often make most of their decisions on the applications that arrived on time. Applying after 13 January narrows your options to the courses that still have room. For a course you care about, treat 13 January as the deadline.
What must be ready before you submit
A UCAS application has four parts that take time, and one of them is not in your hands.
- Your five course choices. Check each course's entry requirements and English requirements against your qualifications before you list it.
- Your personal statement. Allow several drafts. It is the part of the application that most needs time.
- Your predicted grades and reference. Your school or referee adds these. The application only reaches UCAS once the reference is attached and it is sent, so your referee's timing becomes your timing.
- Your qualifications and English evidence. List what you have completed and what you are still taking. Our guide to studying in the UK without IELTS explains when an English test is and is not needed.
A working timeline back from 13 January
- By mid November: choose your five courses and finish a first full draft of your personal statement.
- By early December: final personal statement, and ask your referee for the reference and predicted grades, with a firm date.
- By late December: complete every section of the application and send it to your referee.
- By early January: your referee adds the reference and the application goes to UCAS, at least a few days before 13 January.
School holidays fall in late December, so do not leave the reference request until then.
Applying from Sri Lanka
- The 6:00 PM UK deadline on 13 January is 11:30 PM in Colombo, because the UK is on GMT in January.
- If you are taking the local A/L, ask your school early who will write your reference and provide predicted grades.
- Universities may ask for attested certificates later in the process. Our guide on requesting A/L and O/L certificates online explains how to get them ready.
