UK Student Visa Processing Time: How Long It Takes and How to Plan

October 03, 2026•6 min read

TL;DR: The UK student visa processing time for applications made outside the UK is usually 3 weeks. The clock starts only after you verify your identity, either in the UK Immigration: ID Check app or at a visa application centre appointment. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, and the smart plan works backwards from your start date, leaving room for the CAS, your funds, any interview and travel.

Three weeks sounds simple. In practice, most visa stress comes from the weeks around those three: waiting for a CAS, holding money for the right 28 days, booking an appointment, and a decision that takes longer because a document needs checking. If you are aiming for a January start, including students applying from Sri Lanka, the order you do things in matters more than the decision time itself.

This guide sets out what the official processing time covers, what can slow it down and how to build a timeline that still works if something takes longer than planned.

Wondering whether your January plan still leaves enough time for the visa stage? Check your eligibility with Prosper.

How long a UK student visa takes

GOV.UK lists the standard processing time for a Student visa applied for outside the UK as 3 weeks. Its visa decision waiting times page, updated on 9 September 2026, says UK Visas and Immigration starts processing your application once you either verify your identity and submit your documents through the UK Immigration: ID Check app, or attend your appointment at a visa application centre to give your fingerprints and photograph.

So the 3 weeks does not start when you pay or when you press submit. It starts after identity verification. If your nearest centre has no appointments for ten days, your real wait is closer to five weeks.

GOV.UK also says you may be able to pay for a faster decision. Whether a faster service is offered for your application depends on where you apply, so check the options when you book your appointment.

What can make it take longer

The same GOV.UK page lists reasons a decision can take longer than the standard time:

  • you need to attend an interview

  • your supporting documents need to be verified

  • the information in your application is not accurate or needs further consideration

The first is common for some applicants at the credibility stage. Our guide to the UK student visa credibility interview explains what that conversation covers. The second and third are within your control: a funds letter with the wrong date, or a name that does not match your passport, can add weeks.

Plan backwards from your course start date

Three official rules shape every timeline. You can apply no earlier than 6 months before your course starts. You must apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS. And your money must be held for 28 days in a row, with the end of that period within 31 days of the day you apply.

Here is how that looks for a course starting in late January:

Step

When to aim for it

Why

Accept your offer and meet conditions

By mid November

Your university issues the CAS only after conditions and any pre-CAS checks are complete

Funds in place

From early November

The 28-day holding period must end within 31 days of your application

Receive your CAS

Late November to early December

You need the CAS number to apply

Apply and verify identity

Early to mid December

Starts the 3-week clock with room for the holiday period

Decision

Late December to early January

Standard 3 weeks, plus any extra checks

Travel

From about one month before the start date

You can arrive up to 1 month early if your course lasts more than 6 months

Where applications usually lose time

In our admissions work, the delay is rarely the 3 weeks of processing. It is the gap before it: a CAS that arrives late because a condition was not met, funds moved into an account too recently, or a pre-CAS interview booked at the last minute. Prosper applies to two or three carefully matched universities per student rather than ten, which keeps each file clean and the CAS stage predictable. If you are still waiting on a university decision, read our guide to the pre-CAS interview so it does not become the step that slows you down.

When you can travel

Once your visa is granted, GOV.UK says you can arrive up to 1 month before your course starts if the course lasts more than 6 months, or up to 1 week before if it lasts 6 months or less. Book flights only after the decision arrives.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • You need a tuberculosis test certificate from IOM in Colombo before you apply. Book it early: our IOM Colombo TB test guide explains the steps.

  • Identity verification for applicants in Sri Lanka usually means an appointment at the UK visa application centre in Colombo. Check appointment availability when you plan your dates, especially in December.

  • Funds held in a Sri Lankan bank must meet the same 28-day and 31-day rules as any other account.
