IELTS Sri Lanka: Fees, Test Cities and Which Test to Book

October 26, 2026•5 min read

TL;DR: IELTS Sri Lanka at a glance: you book through the British Council, and tests run on computer in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and other cities. Book IELTS Academic for most university offers, IELTS for UKVI when a UK visa route asks for a Secure English Language Test, and General Training only for work or study below degree level. Fees start at LKR 77,000 in a centre, and results usually arrive within one to three days.

Most IELTS mistakes happen before the test, not in it: the wrong version gets booked, and the fee is paid twice. This guide covers which IELTS to book, what it costs, where it is held and what to bring. If you are still choosing a course or country, Check your eligibility with Prosper before you book a date.

How does IELTS in Sri Lanka work?

IELTS Academic checks whether you are ready to study in English. IELTS General Training is for work, training and study below degree level. IELTS for UKVI is the version UK Visas and Immigration accepts as a Secure English Language Test (SELT). British Council Sri Lanka warns that you cannot transfer between test types after booking, so match your purpose first.

Your purpose Which IELTS to book Where to book
Admission to a bachelor's or master's degree abroad IELTS Academic British Council Sri Lanka, or any official IELTS test centre listed on ielts.org
A UK course where your university or visa route asks for a SELT IELTS for UKVI Academic British Council Sri Lanka (in centre only)
Work, training or study below degree level IELTS General Training (not for degree entry) British Council Sri Lanka, or another official centre on ielts.org

See IELTS Academic vs General Training and IELTS for UKVI vs IELTS Academic for the detail. On 26 March 2026, IELTS confirmed that UK Visas and Immigration had extended its agreement to keep recognising IELTS for UKVI as a SELT; our HOELT guide tracks the Home Office's planned new test.
