Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology: Courses, Fees and Intakes

November 03, 2026

TL;DR: Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a New Zealand polytechnic with campuses in Nelson, Richmond and Blenheim. International students take its IT, applied management, viticulture, nursing, aviation and maritime programmes. The 2026 international fee for the Graduate Diploma in IT is NZ$26,576, with February and July starts in the coming year.

NMIT suits students who want a hands-on qualification in a smaller New Zealand city, often as a lower-cost alternative to a university. It became an independent polytechnic again on 1 January 2026, after leaving the Te Pūkenga network. This guide covers its programmes, fees, entry, intakes and what each qualification means for post-study work. Check your eligibility with Prosper before you pick a programme.

What is Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology?

NMIT is an Institute of Technology and Polytechnic (ITP) at the top of New Zealand's South Island, governed by the NMIT Council (NMIT governance). NMIT announced it would become an independent polytechnic from 1 January 2026, keeping its name (NMIT news), and the Ministry of Education lists it among the polytechnics re-established as independent institutions (Ministry of Education).

NMIT has not yet published its international fees for the next academic year, so confirm the figure with NMIT before you pay. The 2027 figures on some NMIT programme pages are domestic fees, not international ones. For how these compare with universities, see New Zealand tuition fees for international students.

NMIT intakes

NMIT programme pages list these start dates for the coming year:

The Bachelor of Nursing page shows no start dates for the coming year yet (Bachelor of Nursing). A February start leaves little time for a student visa, so a July start is the realistic target for most new applicants.

NMIT entry and English requirements

NMIT sets English by NZQF level, using IELTS Academic (NMIT entry requirements):

Level IELTS Academic Lowest band
Level 3 5.0 5.0
Levels 4 and 5 5.5 5.0
Levels 6 and 7 (diplomas, graduate diplomas, bachelor's) 6.0 5.5
Levels 8 and 9 (postgraduate) 6.5 6.0

Nursing, Counselling and Social Work need 6.5 in every band. NMIT also accepts TOEFL, PTE, OET, LanguageCert and other tests. Graduate and postgraduate diplomas need a bachelor's degree. If the levels are new to you, read our guide to New Zealand qualification levels.

What NMIT qualifications mean for post-study work

Immigration New Zealand ties post-study work rights to the qualification. A bachelor's degree or a Level 8 qualification, with at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand, gives a post-study work visa as long as your study. A master's gives three years (INZ qualifications for a post-study work visa).

From 16 November 2026, a Level 7 graduate diploma studied full time in New Zealand also leads to an open post-study work visa for holders of a bachelor's degree from any country, for the length of the diploma study and up to one year (INZ, 16 November change). That makes the one-year Graduate Diploma in IT a different proposition from before. Our guides to the New Zealand post study work visa and the graduate diploma route explain the detail.

Applying from Sri Lanka

NMIT's entry page says certificates and diplomas need GCE O/L or AS level, degrees need GCE A/L, and graduate and postgraduate diplomas need a bachelor's degree (NMIT entry requirements). For the student visa, Immigration New Zealand asks for NZ$20,000 a year in living funds for courses of one year or more, plus an outward ticket or the money for one (INZ funds). Our New Zealand student visa requirements guide and the IOM document verification guide cover the Colombo steps.

Team Prosper
Team Prosper|Editorial Team
Team Prosper is the editorial desk at Prosper Global Education, the Colombo-based study abroad consultancy co-founded in 2023 by Lasantha Jayawardena and Sandeepani Wickramasinghe. Articles carry this byline when they report a policy update, a university announcement, or an intake change, rather than draw on either founder's first-hand experience of guiding students. The desk links to the primary government or university source behind every factual claim, and says plainly when a rule is still changing or a detail has not yet been confirmed. Requirements move, and an article that pretends otherwise is worth less than one that tells you what is settled and what is not. For guidance on a specific application, Prosper's counsellors work directly with students and families from the Colombo office.
