New Zealand Student Visa Processing Time: Applying from Sri Lanka

September 30, 2026

TL;DR: New Zealand student visa processing time depends mostly on where you will study. Immigration New Zealand recently reported deciding 80% of university student visas within 5 weeks, compared with 8 weeks for private training establishments and 9 weeks for polytechnics. It names Sri Lanka among the countries whose applicants should apply at least three months before travel. The busiest season runs from October to March and has now started, so lodge as early as you can for a February start.

Most families ask one question once the offer arrives: how long will the visa take? Immigration New Zealand (INZ) publishes its student visa wait times and updates them weekly. The numbers show that the type of institution you choose changes the wait more than almost anything else.

New Zealand student visa processing time by provider type

INZ reports how long it takes to decide half of applications and 80% of applications, by the type of education provider:

Provider type50% decided within80% decided within
Schools1 week2 weeks
Universities2.5 weeks5 weeks
Private training establishments4 weeks8 weeks
Polytechnics and institutes of technology4.5 weeks9 weeks

These figures change every week, so treat them as a guide, not a promise. One in five applications takes longer than the 80% figure. On its Fee Paying Student Visa page, INZ gives a broader figure of 80% within 8 weeks, and says student visa processing is busiest between October and March.

Why you should plan for three months

INZ advises students to apply at least three months before they intend to travel. It names applicants from five countries in that advice, because of high application volumes.

In practice, that means working back from your travel date, not your course start date:

If you plan to travel inAim to lodge your visa by
Mid-FebruaryMid-November
Early JulyEarly April

A February start therefore needs your offer, funds and documents ready well before the Christmas break. The three months also leave room for the steps that come before lodging: accepting your offer, paying tuition, booking a medical check if you need one, and gathering bank records. If any of those slip, the whole plan slips with them.

If your travel date is close and your visa is still pending, speak to your provider early. Some providers can advise on late arrival or a deferred start, but that decision is theirs, not INZ's.

What slows an application down

The wait times above assume a complete application. The most common delays come from missing or unclear evidence. INZ asks for:

  • evidence of your offer of a place in an approved course
  • evidence you have paid your tuition fees, or can pay them
  • evidence you have enough money to live on in New Zealand
  • a chest X-ray and police certificates, if required

One rule catches many families. For citizens of some countries applying from their own country, INZ accepts sponsorship only from immediate family. A plan that relies on an uncle or a family friend will not meet it. Our guide to New Zealand student visa funds explains what to show.

If your offer is still conditional, you may not need to wait. See our guide to New Zealand student visa approval in principle.

How to keep your timeline on track

  1. Choose the provider with the timeline in mind. A university offer usually moves faster than a polytechnic or private provider offer.
  2. Book medical checks early. If you need an X-ray, arrange it as soon as you have an offer.
  3. Prepare funds evidence before you lodge. Use immediate family sponsorship only.
  4. Lodge online and answer requests quickly. INZ applications are made online, and the visa fee starts from NZD 850.
  5. Allow for the full process. From signing with Prosper to a visa decision, plan on a minimum of 12 to 15 weeks for New Zealand.
