University of Surrey for International Students: Fees, Entry and Scholarships

November 06, 2026

TL;DR: The University of Surrey takes international students into undergraduate degrees in September and into taught master's courses in September, with many also starting in February. For 2027/28 entry, most master's fees sit between £20,700 and £29,100, and self-funded students can be considered for a £5,000 International Excellence Award. Most courses ask for IELTS 6.5 overall.

Surrey is a campus university in Guildford, 34 minutes from London by train, with strong results in hospitality, veterinary science, engineering and data courses. This guide covers what it costs, what it asks for, when to apply and how scholarships work. If you want a quick read on your own profile first, Check your eligibility with Prosper.

Is the University of Surrey a good fit for international students?

For many applicants, yes. Surrey ranks 219th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 and 262nd in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and it was 7th in the UK for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2026. Its hospitality courses are ranked 1st in the UK in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

What makes it practical for international students is the second master's start date. Many taught master's courses start in February as well as September, so a student who misses the autumn round does not have to wait a full year.

Fees can rise for later years of a longer course. For a wider picture of UK costs, see our guide to UK tuition fees for international students.

University of Surrey entry requirements and English

Master's courses. Surrey publishes degree equivalents for each country rather than a single GPA. Some courses, such as International Business Management MSc, accept a UK 2:2; others ask for a 2:1. The country pages show what your degree percentage means in UK terms.

Undergraduate degrees. Offers are made in UK A-level grades, for example AAB for Economics and Finance BSc, and Surrey converts other national qualifications on its country pages.

English. The common requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, but it varies. Data Science MSc asks for 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in the other parts. Veterinary Medicine and Science asks for 7.0 in every part. Surrey also lists TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo, Oxford ELLT, LanguageCert Academic and Cambridge exams, so check your course page before you book. Our PTE vs IELTS guide compares the two most common choices.

Pathway route. If your grades are below direct entry, the University of Surrey International Study Centre runs an International Foundation Year that leads to a Surrey degree and a Pre-Masters that leads to a Surrey master's.

University of Surrey intakes and deadlines

Route Start Application deadline for overseas applicants

Taught master's September 2027 23 July 2027 (on course pages)

Our UK university deposit guide and how to apply for a UK student visa cover those steps, and UCAS application explains the undergraduate route.

University of Surrey scholarships

  • International Excellence Award, master's: £5,000 off fees for self-funded overseas students on full-time master's courses. The MBA and some named courses are excluded. Deadlines are 8 January 2027 for a February start and 20 August 2027 for September. Awards are made first come, first served.
  • International Excellence Award, undergraduate: £5,000 off the first year when Surrey is your firm UCAS choice. Deadline 24 August 2027.
  • Vice-Chancellor's Future Leaders Award: £7,500 off fees for overseas students from a list of countries Surrey publishes.

Students who join through the International Study Centre cannot hold the Excellence or Vice-Chancellor's awards, so compare the pathway route against these savings.

Applying from Sri Lanka

Surrey has a Sri Lanka page. It treats Sri Lankan GCE A/L grades as equal to UK A-level grades, so an AAB offer means AAB at A/L, and an A*AA offer means AAA. You also need O/L English and Mathematics at grade C. For master's entry, a UK 2:1 equals 80% in a three-year degree or 60% in a four-year special or five-year professional degree; a 2:2 equals 70% or 55%. Sri Lanka is on the list for the £7,500 Vice-Chancellor's Future Leaders Award, with a master's deadline of 8 January 2027. Biometrics are given at VFS Colombo, as our VFS Global Colombo guide explains.
