VFS Global Colombo: What Students Bring and What Happens

October 25, 2026

TL;DR: VFS Global Colombo runs the visa application centres where UK and Australian student visa applicants give their fingerprints and photo after applying online. VFS checks your identity and collects documents; it does not decide your visa. UK applicants book after paying on GOV.UK, and Australian applicants give biometrics at the Australian Visa Application Centre after lodging in ImmiAccount. Bring your passport, your appointment letter and every document your checklist asks for.

Most students reach VFS Global Colombo with the hard work done. What goes wrong is usually small: a missing printout, the wrong passport or an untranslated certificate. Here is the order of steps for the UK and Australia, and what to carry. Not sure you are ready to apply yet? Check your eligibility with Prosper.

What does VFS Global Colombo do for student visa applicants?

VFS Global is a private company contracted to run visa application centres. In Colombo it serves UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The GOV.UK visa application centre finder points applicants in Sri Lanka to VFS Global, and the Australian High Commission calls VFS its contracted centre.

At the centre, VFS:

  • checks your identity against your passport
  • takes fingerprints and a digital photo
  • receives or scans your documents

VFS does not assess applications. The Australian High Commission states that applications submitted at the centre "will be assessed and decided by the Department of Home Affairs", and UKVI decides UK visas.

If UKVI wants to interview you, the UK credibility interview is held online by video with a UKVI officer, not with VFS staff.

The UK visa application centre in Colombo: the order of steps

VFS comes near the end of a UK Student visa application:

  1. Accept your offer and receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies).
  2. Take the TB test at IOM Colombo, the only clinic GOV.UK lists for Sri Lanka. See our IOM Colombo TB test guide.
  3. Apply online on GOV.UK, up to 6 months before your course starts. The fee from outside the UK is £558 (checked 25/10/2026), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge. See how to apply for a UK Student visa.
  4. Book your VFS appointment. GOV.UK says: "You must apply for your visa before you can make an appointment at a visa application centre." If the form offers the UK Immigration: ID Check app instead, follow it.
  5. Attend VFS Colombo for fingerprints, photo and documents. Our UK Student visa biometrics guide covers the appointment in detail.
  6. Wait for the UKVI decision. If approved, you receive an eVisa.

The Australian visa application centre in Colombo: the order of steps

For an Australian Student visa (subclass 500), you lodge online first:

  1. Receive your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) and arrange Overseas Student Health Cover.
  2. Complete the health examination with a Home Affairs approved panel physician. Our Australia health examination guide covers the HAP ID.
  3. Lodge online in ImmiAccount. The High Commission confirms this is available from Sri Lanka. Use our Australia Student visa document checklist.
  4. Book biometrics with VFS Colombo. The High Commission states: "All visa applicants located in Sri Lanka are required to provide their biometrics." It advises booking early to avoid delays.
  5. Attend the Australian Visa Application Centre for fingerprints and photo.
  6. Wait for the Home Affairs decision.

What to bring to your VFS Colombo appointment

Your booking email has the final list. As a base, carry:

  • Your passport: the one entered in the online form
  • Your appointment confirmation, printed or on your phone
  • Supporting documents, originals and copies where asked: CAS or CoE details, financial evidence, certificates
  • The TB test certificate for a UK application
  • Certified English translations of any document not in English

In our experience, students most often forget the translations, the printed confirmation and the exact passport used in the form.

Check the official VFS page for any optional paid services and prices. They do not affect the decision.

How long after VFS do UK and Australian decisions take?

For the UK, GOV.UK says a decision usually comes within 3 weeks from outside the UK. Where offered, priority costs £500 extra (usually 5 working days) and super priority £1,000 extra (usually by the end of the next working day), checked 25/10/2026.

For Australia, check current processing times on the Home Affairs website. Either way, wait for the decision before booking flights.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Location: both centres are in Colombo. Confirm the current address and hours on the official VFS page when you book.
  • Translations: arrange certified English translations of Sinhala or Tamil documents in advance.
  • TB test first: for the UK, book IOM Colombo early before a September intake.
