When Can You Travel to the UK on a Student Visa?
TL;DR: When can you travel to the UK on a Student visa? GOV.UK sets two windows. If your course lasts more than 6 months, you can arrive up to 1 month before it starts. If it lasts 6 months or less, you can arrive up to 1 week before. Either way, you must not enter the UK before the start date on your visa, and you need to arrive before your university's last enrolment date.
Most arrival problems are not about the visa itself. They come from a flight booked before the visa start date, a decision that arrives later than planned, or an enrolment deadline that nobody checked. This guide sets out the rule, the dates that control it, and a planning timeline for a January 2027 start. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local steps are near the end.

How early can you arrive in the UK on a Student visa?
GOV.UK gives the arrival window by course length:
- Course of more than 6 months (most bachelor's and master's degrees): you can arrive up to 1 month before the course starts.
- Course of 6 months or less: you can arrive up to 1 week before the course starts.
GOV.UK adds one firm condition: "You must not travel to the UK before the start date given on your visa, no matter when your course starts." The start date on your eVisa, not your flight booking, decides the earliest day you can enter.
| Your situation | Earliest you can enter the UK | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Course longer than 6 months | Up to 1 month before the course start | The start date on your eVisa |
| Course of 6 months or less | Up to 1 week before the course start | The start date on your eVisa |
| Visa start date later than you expected | The visa start date, whichever is later | Do not fly before it |
| Course already started, visa just granted | As soon as you can, before the university's final arrival date | The university's late arrival rules |
Want a second pair of eyes on your visa and travel dates before you book a flight?
When does your Student visa start?
Your permission is issued as an eVisa, which you view in your UKVI account. GOV.UK says you need to link the travel document you use to come to the UK to that account, and that you may have to prove your immigration status when you travel. Our guide to the UK eVisa for students covers the account set-up.
The University of the Arts London (UAL) puts the rule plainly for its students: enter the UK "after your visa starts, not before", and "If you enter the UK before your visa starts, you may be asked to leave the UK."
When should you apply so you can travel on time?
From outside the UK, GOV.UK says the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts, and that you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks. You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) first, so your university's CAS deadline is often the real starting gun. Our guides to the CAS, the UK student visa processing time and the 28-day rule for funds cover each step.
A January 2027 planning timeline
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) publishes its January 2027 intake dates. Using them as a worked example for a course longer than 6 months:
- 30 October 2026: LJMU application deadline.
- 30 November 2026: LJMU CAS issuing deadline.
- As soon as you have your CAS: apply for the Student visa, allowing about 3 weeks for a decision.
- From 11 December 2026: the earliest arrival date under the 1-month rule, if your eVisa start date allows it.
- 11 January 2027: programme start and the mandatory international welcome.
Your own university's dates will differ, so put them into the same five lines.
What happens if you arrive late?
Each university sets its own final arrival date, and the consequences are strict. For its autumn 2026 intake, Swansea University told students whose course had already started that most could assume an automatic extension to 19 October 2026, with an earlier final date for listed courses. Swansea says students who try to enrol after a confirmed final date "should expect to be refused enrolment", and that missing it on a listed course means "your record will be closed and your immigration sponsorship withdrawn".
If your visa decision is delayed, contact your university's visa or admissions team before your final date, not after it. A deferral to the next intake is usually safer than a late arrival the university cannot accept.
Applying from Sri Lanka
- If you need a TB test, GOV.UK says the certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. Book it so it is still valid when you apply. Our IOM Colombo TB test guide covers the booking.
- Link the passport you will travel on to your UKVI account before you fly from Colombo. If you renew your passport, update the account.
- Book a flight that lands on or after your eVisa start date, and inside your university's arrival window. A refundable or changeable fare gives you room if the decision comes late.
Frequently asked questions
Can I travel to the UK more than a month before my course starts?
No. GOV.UK allows up to 1 month before a course of more than 6 months, and up to 1 week before a shorter course.
Can I enter before the start date on my visa if my course starts soon?
No. GOV.UK says you must not travel before the start date given on your visa, no matter when your course starts.
What if my visa arrives after my course has started?
Check your university's late arrival rules at once. Universities such as Swansea set a final date, after which enrolment can be refused.
How long does a Student visa decision take from outside the UK?
GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks, and you may be able to pay for a faster decision.
PS: The students who arrive calm are the ones who worked backwards from the first day of teaching: course start, arrival window, visa start date, decision time, CAS deadline. Write those five dates down this week. Check your eligibility with Prosper and we will check them with you.
