New Zealand July Intake: When to Apply and What to Prepare

October 23, 2026

TL;DR: When is the New Zealand July intake? Semester 2 at most New Zealand universities starts in mid-July. In 2027, AUT, Massey, Waikato and Otago start classes on 12 July and Canterbury on 19 July. International application deadlines range from 30 April 2027 at Otago to 8 June 2027 at the University of Auckland. Immigration New Zealand asks students to apply for a visa at least 3 months before travel, so in practice you need an offer by early April.

The July intake is the second main entry point to New Zealand universities. It suits students who finish a degree or job mid-year, or who missed the February start. The catch is that the visa timeline, not the university deadline, decides when you really need to apply.

This guide covers the 2027 start dates, the application deadlines, the courses that do not take a July intake and a month-by-month plan. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, the local points are near the end.

When does Semester 2 start in 2027?

Each university publishes its own calendar. These are the dates confirmed so far for the July 2027 intake.

UniversitySemester 2 2027 startsNote
AUT12 July 2027Orientation from 5 July
Massey University12 July 2027
University of Waikato12 July 2027Called Trimester B
University of Otago12 July 2027International orientation 5 to 9 July; arrive by 5 July
University of Canterbury19 July 2027Lectures start
University of AucklandMid-July (2027 date not yet confirmed)Semester Two began 20 July in 2026

Victoria University of Wellington and Lincoln University also take July starters. Check their 2027 calendars before you book anything.

What are the application deadlines?

International deadlines for Semester 2 vary more than the start dates.

  • University of Otago: 30 April 2027. The accommodation deadline is 15 May 2027.
  • Victoria University of Wellington: 1 May for Trimester 2. Some programmes close earlier; Master of Marine Conservation closes on 1 March.
  • Massey University: 1 May for standard qualifications in 2026, with earlier dates for selected-entry programmes such as the MBA. Check the 2027 dates when they are published.
  • University of Auckland: 8 June 2027 for international undergraduate and most postgraduate applications. Some programmes close much earlier, such as the Master of Energy on 3 April 2027.
  • University of Waikato: no fixed international cut-off. Applications are processed as they arrive, and you may be offered a later intake if visa timing is tight.

Which courses do not take a July intake?

Many professional and limited-entry programmes start only in February. Examples from university admission pages:

  • Massey: Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Clinical Psychology, Executive MBA, Master of Counselling, Master of Applied Social Work and MSc (Nutrition and Dietetics) have no Semester Two intake.
  • University of Auckland: programmes such as the MBChB, BPharm, Master of Nursing Science and Master of Physiotherapy Practice are listed for Semester One only.
  • Waikato: the CA (Professional Accounting) programme has one intake a year, in January.

If your course is on a list like this, plan for February instead. Our guide to the New Zealand February intake covers that timeline.

Why the visa sets your real deadline

Immigration New Zealand asks students to apply at least 3 months before their travel date. If you need to arrive by early July for orientation, your visa application should go in by early April. Most university deadlines fall after that date, so waiting for the deadline can leave too little time for the visa.

You can apply for a visa with a conditional offer and receive approval in principle, but the visa is only granted once your offer is unconditional. Read our guides on New Zealand student visa requirements and approval in principle for the detail.

You also need to show living funds. Immigration New Zealand sets this at NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary students, plus money for a return flight. Our New Zealand student visa funds guide explains what counts.

A month-by-month plan for July 2027

WhenWhat to do
November 2026 to January 2027Shortlist courses, confirm a July intake exists and sit your English test
January to February 2027Submit university applications with transcripts, CV and statement
February to March 2027Receive offers, meet conditions and pay deposits where required
By early April 2027Lodge your student visa application with funds evidence
May to June 2027Medical checks if requested, accommodation and flights after the visa
Early July 2027Arrive for orientation before classes start

Starting in November gives you room for a slow transcript request or a retake of one English test section.

Applying from Sri Lanka

  • Immigration New Zealand names Sri Lanka among the countries where students should apply at least 3 months before travel. Treat early April 2027 as your latest lodgement date for a July start.
  • Document checks and medical steps can add time. Read our guides on IOM document verification and the chest x-ray requirement.
  • Request university transcripts and degree certificates early. Some institutions take several weeks to issue official copies.

Frequently asked questions

Is the July intake smaller than February in New Zealand?
Usually, yes. Fewer programmes run in July, and some professional courses start only in February. Check your specific course page.

Can I apply after the university deadline?
Sometimes. Auckland considers late postgraduate applications after 4 July only if places remain. Late applications also leave little time for the visa.

How long does a New Zealand student visa take?
Immigration New Zealand publishes current wait times. Recently, university student visas averaged about 2 weeks, with most decided within 5 weeks, but times change, so apply at least 3 months before travel.

PS: Count back 3 months from your arrival date and treat that as your deadline. If you want a second opinion on your July plan, Check your eligibility with Prosper.
