Universities in UK for International Students: How to Choose

November 08, 2026

TL;DR: The right universities in UK for international students are the ones that match your course, your grades, your budget and your intake, not simply the top of a league table. Taught master's fees at the universities compared here run from about £17,950 to £26,300 a year, most ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, and several offer a January start.

The UK has a long list of universities that welcome international students. The hard part is narrowing the list. This guide gives you a simple way to choose, then compares six universities across different entry levels and budgets. If you want a shortlist built around your own results, check your eligibility with Prosper.

How do you choose universities in UK for international students?

Work through five questions in this order. Each one removes universities that do not fit, so you end with a shortlist you can actually apply to.

  1. Course first. Pick the subject and the type of master's or bachelor's degree, then look only at universities that teach it. A strong university with a weak version of your course is a poor choice.
  2. Entry level. Compare your degree class or A/L results with the university's requirement. Apply to a mix: one reach, two that match your grades, and one safer option.
  3. Total cost. Add tuition to living costs. The UK Student visa asks you to show £1,529 a month for study in London or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to nine months.
  4. Intake. September is the main intake. January suits students who are ready now, but not every course offers it.
  5. Sponsor status. Every university you apply to must be on the UK government's register of licensed student sponsors.

League tables help at step 2, but read them with care. Our guide to uni rankings explains what the main tables measure.

UK universities compared: fees, English and intakes

The table compares a data or computing master's at six universities Prosper can apply to for you. Figures come from each university's own course pages, with the fee year shown.

University Location Course International fee IELTS January start
Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh MSc Data Science £26,296 (January 2027) 6.0, no part below 5.5 Yes
Brunel University of London London (Uxbridge) MSc Data Science and Analytics £25,535 (2027/28) 6.5, no part below 6.0 Yes
University of Greenwich London MSc Data Science £19,450 (2026/27) 6.5, no part below 5.5 Yes
Keele University Staffordshire MSc Computer Science £18,900 (2027/28) 6.5, no part below 5.5 Closed to international applicants for January 2027
University of the West of Scotland Paisley MSc Big Data £18,900 (2026/27) 6.0, no part below 5.5 Yes
University of Hertfordshire Hatfield Standard one-year master's £17,950 to £22,950 (2026/27) 6.5, no part below 5.5 January 2027 intake open

Read the table in two ways. First by entry level: Heriot-Watt and Brunel both sit in the UK's top 40 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, while Greenwich, Hertfordshire and UWS charge lower fees, so they suit a wider range of budgets. Second by cost: a London university adds about £3,200 to the living funds you must show over nine months, compared with study outside London.

Many awards are automatic once you hold an offer, so your offer itself often decides the award. Our guide to scholarships for Sri Lankan students covers government and university awards together.

What the UK student visa and Graduate Route add

Once you hold an offer and a CAS, the Student visa costs £558 from outside the UK, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 a year. Our UK tuition fees guide shows how these add up with tuition.

After you graduate, the Graduate Route lets you stay and work. According to GOV.UK, it lasts two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, with three years for PhD graduates. Students starting a master's now will apply under the 18-month rule. Our guide on how to apply for the UK Graduate visa explains the timing.

Applying from Sri Lanka

Each UK university sets its own equivalent for a Sri Lankan degree. Keele, for example, treats 55% or above as a 2:2 and 60% or above as a 2:1. Check each university's Sri Lanka page, or its course page, for your exact grades.

For English, IELTS is accepted everywhere in the table. Our IELTS Sri Lanka guide lists test cities and which version to book. You will also need a TB test at the IOM clinic in Colombo and biometrics at VFS Global Colombo before your visa decision.
