University of Law for International Students: Courses, Fees and Intakes

November 03, 2026

TL;DR: The University of Law for international students is a UK specialist law and business university with campuses in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham. It teaches the LLB, the SQE-based LLM Legal Practice, the PGDL, the Bar Practice Course and business master's degrees, with several starts a year and automatic international bursaries.

If you want to study law in the UK, or move into law after a degree in another subject, the University of Law (ULaw) is one of the few universities built almost entirely around that goal. This guide sets out the courses international students take, what they cost, what entry needs, and when you can start. Check your eligibility with Prosper before you choose a route.

What is the University of Law for international students?

ULaw describes itself as one of the longest-established specialist providers of legal education in the UK. It also teaches business, criminology, psychology and computer science. Its own campuses are in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, London (Bloomsbury and Moorgate), Manchester and Nottingham, and it runs partner sites on other university campuses around England (ULaw international students).

ULaw holds a Home Office Student sponsor licence. It does not sponsor part-time or online study, so a Student visa applicant needs a full-time, on-campus course (ULaw visa requirements).

University of Law courses, fees and intakes

These are the main courses international students apply for. Fees are ULaw's published international fees for 2026/27 unless stated. London fees are higher than the other campuses.

Course Length Starts International fee (2026/27)
LLB (Hons) Law 3 years (4 with foundation year) January, September £18,100 a year London, £17,200 elsewhere
LLM Legal Practice (SQE1 and SQE2) 13 to 24 months January, March, June, September £18,850 London, £15,150 elsewhere
PGDL (law conversion) Two terms full time January, May, September £15,450 London, £12,450 elsewhere
Bar Practice Course 8 to 20 months January, July, September £18,100 London, £16,450 elsewhere
MBA 1 year February, April, June, October £20,600
MSc Business Analytics 1 year Check course page £19,050 London, £17,500 elsewhere

Sources: the LLB, LLM SQE1 and SQE2, PGDL, Bar Practice Course, MBA and MSc Business Analytics pages. The LLB rises to £18,650 (London) and £17,700 (elsewhere) for 2027/28 entry. SQE exam fees are paid separately from the LLM fee.

The many start dates matter. If you miss a September intake, the LLM, PGDL and Bar course each have a January start, so you do not lose a full year. For how ULaw fees compare with other UK universities, see our guide to UK tuition fees for international students.

Which route into law fits your degree?

The right course depends on where you are starting from and where you want to practise.

  • Finished A/Levels or equivalent: the LLB is the undergraduate law degree.
  • Have a degree in another subject: the PGDL converts it to law in two terms.
  • Want to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales: the SQE route. The Solicitors Regulation Authority says you need a degree, to pass SQE1 and SQE2, two years of qualifying work experience, and to meet character and suitability rules (SRA). ULaw's LLM Legal Practice prepares you for both SQE stages inside a master's degree.
  • Want to become a barrister in England and Wales: the Bar Practice Course.

An LLM alone does not qualify you to practise. Our guide to the LLM in the UK explains what a Master of Laws can and cannot do for your career.

University of Law entry requirements and English

Published academic entry (ULaw course pages):

  • LLB: BBB at A Level, or 120 UCAS points, plus English at GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent.
  • LLM Legal Practice, PGDL and MBA: a 2:2 degree or equivalent.
  • Bar Practice Course: a 2:1, or a 2:2 qualifying law degree with an enhanced interview from January 2027.

English language, IELTS overall with the lowest band (ULaw undergraduate and postgraduate entry):

Course IELTS overall Lowest band
LLB 6.0 5.5
LLM Legal Practice, PGDL 6.5 6.0
MBA, MSc 6.0 5.5
Bar Practice Course 7.5 7.5

ULaw also offers its own English test for applicants without an accepted score. Ask ULaw whether its test works for your visa route before you rely on it. Our guide to IELTS for UKVI vs IELTS Academic explains which IELTS a UK course needs.

University of Law scholarships and payments

ULaw's international awards are applied automatically, with no separate application (ULaw international scholarships). For courses starting between 1 June 2026 and 31 May 2027, the International Bursary takes £2,500 a year off the LLB and £1,000 off the LLM Legal Practice, PGDL and Bar course. MBA students receive £4,000 off in London or £5,500 elsewhere. ULaw also lists regional scholarships for students from named countries; check the terms on that page for your country.

After you accept an offer, international full-time students pay an acceptance payment that counts towards fees. ULaw lists 24 November 2026 as the acceptance date for January and February intakes, with an early bird reduction of £500 for paying on time (ULaw offers and benefits). For how deposits and your CAS connect, read our guide to the UK university deposit for international students.

Applying from Sri Lanka

ULaw publishes a Sri Lanka country page that sets out how it reads Sri Lankan qualifications (ULaw Sri Lanka). Send your A/L or degree transcripts with your application and ask ULaw to confirm the grades it needs for your chosen course.

Once you hold a CAS, the Student visa steps from Colombo are the TB test at the IOM clinic and biometrics at the visa application centre. Our IOM Colombo TB test guide and how to apply for a UK student visa guide walk through each step, and the documents required for a master's in the UK checklist shows what to gather first.

Team Prosper|Editorial Team
Team Prosper is the editorial desk at Prosper Global Education, the Colombo-based study abroad consultancy co-founded in 2023 by Lasantha Jayawardena and Sandeepani Wickramasinghe. Articles carry this byline when they report a policy update, a university announcement, or an intake change, rather than draw on either founder's first-hand experience of guiding students. The desk links to the primary government or university source behind every factual claim, and says plainly when a rule is still changing or a detail has not yet been confirmed. Requirements move, and an article that pretends otherwise is worth less than one that tells you what is settled and what is not. For guidance on a specific application, Prosper's counsellors work directly with students and families from the Colombo office.
